TRANSFORMERS MOSAIC: "The Choice"

The Universe of the Transformers is vast, and populated by many characters. Their universe is a large tapestry, made up of the stories and points of view of countless experiences that serve the larger whole.

These are some of those stories. This is:

It should be noted that while this project has been recognized by IDW Publishing and Hasbro, none of the works presented have been commissioned or solicited by either company. The stories are not official canon, except where noted.
These stories are the result of Transformers enthusiasts taking the time out of their busy days to contribute to a universe they love.
No one has been paid for the production of these stories.

Aww, Megatron is just a big softy at heart. :P He should have blown him away. Good one, team! Looking forward to the next one as always.

I love the Mosaic!!!
I love seeing bad guys have a soft side.
I guess Megatron wouldn't blast him when he's out cold. It's only worth it to him if he obliterates him in the middle of pitched combat.

cool.

this is like, the "official" cut scene from the pilot episode of the G1 cartoon series.

hey, come to think of it, Megs might be a softie here, but he's got a point you know...G1 woulda never happened if he did Prime there and then. nice mosaic.

I'm starting to see a pattern here... Bad guys really aren't all that bad, BORING!

Another excellent Mosaic.

"Bad guys are boring"?? Just the opposite I reckon. These Mosaics just go to show that the bad guys are just as complex and as diverse as any of the heroes. Who wants a 2d villian after all?

Megatron a softie? Hardly. He doesn't spare Prime for sake of compassion, honor, or old times' sake. It appears here that the act of warfare and conquest is his existence, and that if he destroyed his only opponent, then that existence would lose purpose and meaning.

I'm not sure if I buy into Megatron stepping aside from victory for this reason, but we do need some kind of contrivance to make the G1 storyline work, and this serves as well as any.

As always, compliments to the creators.

BW Megs was better at some points. He simply shot down Optimus...

Make no mistake, this isn't Megatron being a softie. This is the megalomaniac shining through. What is a villain without a hero opposite? Usually more successful, but also less dramatic.

I penned a script where the "bad guy is still bad", so to speak. Remains to be seen whether anyone will want to illustrate it...

But in this case, it's the cartoon's fault that Megatron was "soft" enough to spare the deactivated Autobots at all. I agree that this Mosaic is a good explanation for the matter. The idea of ensuring that you always have a [worthy] enemy to pit yourself against certainly fits into the Decepticon philosophy, and isn't what I'd call "soft".

I like that explanation. It's kinda like how Armada Megatron was portrayed in the cartoon after he blew up Prime.

The only boring thing is one dimensional villains. I, for one, prefer my bad guys to be complex.

I commend the authors for this one. They had to know that it would spark debate/criticism for how Megs was portrayed.

I like it. Reminds me of Lex Luthor's reaction to Superman's death or the motive behind Mr. Glass' actions in "Unbreakable" (a very underrated movie BTW). Every super-villian needs the super-hero, otherwise executing their plots have little to no challenge and ultimately become meaningless, despite the achievement of a goal.

This holds true in sports too. Most players do not want to face their arch rivals when the rival has key players out. They want to defeat them at full strength so that the victory can be savored to it's utmost. If the Colts played the Pats and Tom Brady was hurt, the Colts victory would not mean nearly as much as if Brady played.

If the Colts knock out Brady during the game, that's a different story. That's part of the game, just like Megs defeating Prime during a battle or Luthor outsmarting Superman during one of his schemes.

Second, Megs and Prime have had a long history together (in any continuity) and while they have different values and perspectives, they are truly the only ones who understand one another. Leaders are often lonely because no one understands the demands of the job. To find someone who understands you, even if they disagree with your goals, is a rare thing.

How many times do the leaders of opposing armies end up respecting their opponents to the point of kindness? It's happened in almost every long war in human history (Alexander the Great & Darius, Grant & Lee, Montgomery & Rommel), so why not with the Cybertronians?

Reminded me of the Batman/Joker relationship. Across the various media (apart from that abortion of a movie Tim Burton did), the Joker has had oppurtunites to kill Batman whilst he's defenseless, but passes them up because he doesn't just want to kill Batman, he wants to defeat him.

Clearly Megatron WOULDN'T kill him, or G1 would have consisted of the Decepticons raping Earth for it's resources unchallenged.

would have been nicer if Prime was in his The War Within design as he hadn't yet gotten an Earth form yet. But then it would have contradicted the cartoon which didn't redesign their robot forms (although technically the transformers would have had different bodies than on earth).
