Wow, one of the least-remembered original G1 characters is making one heck of a comeback in 2013!

What the heck, is his name officially Trailcutter now? Seems like Hasbro's just running with it if they're using it in the comics now too. Don't know why they couldn't just call him Autobot Trailbreaker on the toy packages.

The terms Autobot or Decepticon can only be placed in front of a word that is too common for Hasbro to lay claim to, such as Jazz or Tracks. This creates a phrase which Hasbro can lay claim to. When the word is claimed by a different company, such as Ford (I think), then adding words in front won't work.

If they can't openly use a trademark then they just can't use it. they've explained before that they can't just call them autobot (name) trademarks aren't that simple and if they do use them unlawfully then it can cost companies a lot of money. Hasbro have tried there best in most cases with the new names the best thing fans can do is accept it and move with it and stop complaining about everytime. as long as the heart of the character doesn't change then the character it self doesn't and sometimes it is just a name.

For has the "Trailblazer". Not sure where the issue would be with actually calling him Trailbreaker, but it doesn't really matter. Good to see they are doing something with him.
It would be neat to have an updated figure. Wait and see, I guess.

My secret hope is that each Spotlight would reveal the origin of their unique powers but that doesn't seem to be the case. For instance, how come Trailbreaker can make forcefields and no one else? What was the origin of that power? Why can Skywarp teleport and nobody else. It would be cool if these spotlights could shed some light on those unique powers.

It occurs to me that they have to use that name to promote the comic, since they can't use the actual character name because they don't have the copyright to it.

Hasbro loves to control the names of their products. And the link above is a possible reason for the change.

I might be in the minority here, but I'm not a big fan of Livo's artwork. Really hoping the "B" cover looks better.

For me, it's like Marmite: I neither love nor hate it.
Not sure if this would be the case, but do protected names only apply if it's in the naming of a product (in this case the comic)? Couldn't IDW call the comic Spotlight: Trailcutter, but then refer to the character within its pages as Trailbreaker?
