UPDATE: RUMOR Hobby Link Japan to add Safety Cap to MP Megatron

Posted by Down_Shift Jan 30, 2007 at 8:43pm CST 24,145 views
According to Powered Convoy over at Allspark.com, he has received an e-mail from Hobby Link Japan stating that they will be adding the orange tip to the end of MP-05 Megatron. Here's what the e-mail read:

Hi,

I'm sorry to inform you that we will be making any
adjustments necessary to the item in order to comply with US
customs law. Even though it is packed in robot mode, it can still be transformed into a realistic looking gun and thus would require an orange tip at the end of the barrel. This is evident in Hasbro's TF Classics Megatron that although his alt mode does not resemble a real gun but it still has a
bright orange tip.

Thanks for your understanding.

UPDATEWe have received word that this may be false. To see a recent e-mail from HLJ stating that this will only happen at the request of the buyer, click the Discuss button.

Please consider this a rumor until HLJ can issue a proper statement in regards to the orange cap.

More Bots. More News. More Awesome.

I was just about to post that as news. I have a bad habbit of not checking our own forums before I post, but this time I did. So front paged and credited (among the others)

Oh well. Can't beat the law. I'm not complaining though, I'm not sure how it effects Canada mind you. Can't remember if the Snail gets has to ship through the states... :-?

Well, if getting Megatron unmodified won't happen, the next question should be how do we remove the cap?

Once again, I remind everyone of TFC #6. Megatron came, shipped direct from overseas mind you, in gun form. G1 Megs looks a hell of a lot more realistic than the MP Megs will.

Now, how many of you had problems with him? Show of hands please.. anyone, anyone, anyone? No? Well, there you go.

I for one am happy about the orange caps, especialy those placed on laser type toys, or guns with clear green plastic chambers.

These toys are fun for those who enjoy them, but we have to think of the safty of everyone who may mistake that for a real ray gun.

These are social concerns! Think of the amont of roberies commited last year buy realistic looking plastic laser arms.

I feel we as a fan base should be more compassionate in these matters and maybe even rally in suport of the families who've suffered casualties in the ray gun wars both home and abroad.

Yes, Megatron is fun, but is that fun realy worth our sense of security and understanding for our fellow man?

Once we have a legitiment list of stores that will be shipping unmodified Megatron MP-05s please post it, so i can cancel my order to HLJ and order from another source, i'm sick to my stomach now, and i'm very disappointed in the toy laws and HLJ for conforming to our countries outlandish law..parents lock your kids up at night, and cops make sure that 10 year old has a real gun before you draw your side arm!!

I hope it won't come to that!! If it does, lets hope they will sell unmodified resculpted barrels on ebay so we can unscrew the modified version and replace it with an almost identical Non orange tipped version.

Barbarian!

Also, if my kids touch this first I'll wonder where I got kids from, second, they'll learn why to be afraid of guns as I beat them with bricks!

It is my opinion that the stores that are going to sell the OPENED, MODIFIED MP-05, that they should have a cheaper/discounted price. They are after all opening a collectible, and then forth ruining it with hot glue and orange tips.

As for the toy laws and politics of it all, I couldn't agree more with Skywarp-2.

You wouldn't want them to use toy guns, but teach them to use household items, like bricks, as weapons? WHo is the barbarian?

I had to say something when I saw this one...

You see, it was this very situation, a 10 year old being shot, by a cop, over a realistic plastic M-16 type rifle, that led to the entire "orange cap" law.

When it comes to a threatening situation, the cop is trained to protect the lives of himself and all others before anything else. Said child did not comply with the cop's requests, and earned a bullet for it. After he was subdued, investigations quickly noticed that the M-16 was plastic, and the whole situation was deemed a "tragedy". One requiring a law to protect other obstinate 10 year olds with toy guns playing cops/robbers, paramilitary, etc.
Of course, I don't remember really even seeing a handful of plastic rifles in any store for years after this happened, because parents were afraid to buy their stubborn boys a toy gun, fearing they would "modify" it back to something that will get them shot...

Remember, this is America, land of the fee and home of the lawsuit. Any lawyer can make your actions not your problem if they can place "ultimate" blame someone else and get a ton of money from that other organization. See McDonalds and hot coffee, real-gun lawsuits, tobacco lawsuits, etc. for lots of examples...

There was also the story that a guy at the Botcon in St. Paul
(I think) a few years ago, who had bought a G1 Megatron and was going back to his hotel and he had they toy in gun mode next to him in the passenger seat.
Then he got pulled over for speeding and when the cop saw a realistic looking gun in the passenger seat he came very close to getting arrested for carrying a consealed weapon. Thankfully he was able to convince the officer it was only a toy by transforming the it into robot mode.

It should also be noted that when I bought the first reissue of the G1 Megatron (not the one in book box the one in the classic G1 Japanese packaging), I learned a very interesting fact that the Japanese versions of Megatron were pellet guns
the ones that were released in the USA back in 84 weren't.

These toy laws are stupid. They litigate against the toys because they're "kid things," but if you litigated against the actual guns, everyone would be... well, up in arms. The threat is irrelevant. The law passed because the people who wrote it were entirely unaffected by it. It was just a way to win people over and stay in office.

And it makes more sense if an actual gun had an orange tip. Orange, red, and yellow are natural warning signs.
