Fellow Seibertronian chuckdawg1999 has a review of Transformers Cyberverse Ultra Class Sludge for us. Some fans were looking forward to this release for their Dinobots collection and have the Cyberverse version of the Dinobots on their shelf. So now we can see how this toy fared.

chuckdawg1999 wrote:I'd love to say that Sludge is a good figure, but that wouldn't be true. The paint detail is really nice, I dig that metallic blue, the backplate for the Energon armor gimmick won't lock into place making it hard to handle the figure while most of the limb joints are very loose. I have to say wait for a sale or pass on Sludge entirely.

Was able to get that deluxe cheetor I was looking forward to and well, yeah not great. Really don't like how the tail can't fold up higher in robot mode, and that alt mode is just not good.

I got Sludge too, and he is pretty neat. Not sure why chuck didn't like him, but he is fun to me. Transformation is fun, and the weapon is cool. He's a good addition!

My biggest issue was the back not locking when closed. I've been told by several viewers that I wasn't pushing hard enough so it's a possible case of having to use more force than I care to.

Sometime it's not easy to know what is the apropriate amount of force to use. Too often, I forced things too hard or the wrong way and it ended up with tears and sadness.

Uhm... Hasbro, you're supposed to deliver to big box retail first, not liquidators:

Seriously, found them at my local Ross in the DFW area. Is this another case of retailers passing on current stock?

Guess who got the new Deluxe Slug already?

This guy!!

And boy oh boy, is he a dandy. He is a really good deluxe, super good. Right up there with Bee as the best deluxe of the line.

Image

Look at this bot mode right here. This is G1 Slug, put through a color filter to crank up the color differentiation, with spikes, some stylization, and some mean sneering. He is so cool looking. And he can move too! Forward and backwards ankle movement, all kinds of leg movement, the only thing missing are bicep and wrist swivels, but the forearm swivels take care of most of that

Image
Image

Have a 360 turnaround

Transformation is pretty insane. You yank up part of the torso, tilt it around 180, crunch the abs and dino head, swivel the dino head and waist, and origami the tail out of the legs as the feet form the back. it's nuts

Image
Image
Image
Image

This dino mode is really sweet. It is chonky, but still mean looking

Finally, have some comparisons to the other Cyberverse Dinobots minus Grimlock, as he is still buried in moving totes. And have some to SS86 Slug

He is definitely a top level Cyberverse figure. He is really good. He is a lot of fun too.

Thanks to Seibertron's own D-Maximal_Primal, we can bring you a fantastic look at one of the newest Cyberverse Deluxe figures- Slug! He's part of the aptly named Dinobots Unite subline of Cyberverse, and is due to show up at retail any time now. Let's see what D-Max has to say about this incarnation of the Dinobot brawler.

Guess who got the new Deluxe Slug already?

Swoop is sold with Bumblebee, the others are sold individually, all in different assortments.

Swoop - Roll & Combine
Sludge - Ultra
Slug - Deluxe (also a Roll & Combine)
Snarl - Warrior

Are there any pictures of these guys with their PotP counterparts? No real reason, just curious how they compare.

The non combining Transformers Cyberverse Volcanicus was found at Target, priced at $30. For those curious about this toy, here is a written review below with images from Transformers fans T-Hybrid who posted it on the TFW2005 fansite.

Bot mode looks cool. He has no leg articulation, but has shoulders, elbows, and even some swivel that lets him get a little dynamic with his weapon.

They're finally figured out how to lock the armor in place. It sits on his back but is triggered by a lever that literally pins it down so it can't accidentally deploy.

Also, he has waist swivel if you disengage the lever on his lower body. When it's clicked in, it holds him steady.

Transformation is nothing to write home about. Flip out the beast legs/transform the arms, then bend him at the knees (it's not articulation, there's a gear system that makes it tough to push down) and lift up/extend his beast neck.

He locks in place like this without the tail/key. But it completes the look. Pull the key back out to trigger the quick transformation.

For $30 he's going to feel steep. But kids are going to love the beast mode and his bot mode is a great new take on Volcanicus I hope to see explored with combiner toys.

I got mine on sale for $25. That's not bad for the size. And he looks good with his buddies.

Something else I find interesting. His bot mode looks more like Predaking than the original Volcanicus. Including both the wings and Swoop's cannons coming off his back. Combine that with its beast mode, and it really reminds me of that proposed G1 combiner that formed a dragon instead of a robot.

I like that part since it shows that he combines differently in this fiction. The arms arm both made up by Sludge who spkits his whole body in half.

Why does he have to split in half to form the arms? Why can't he fold himself out much like the mastadon does for the Dino-Megazord?

Its what the designers chose. Would be cool if they ever make an actual combining toy to see if they pull that off

Knowing that I like him a little more now. I had just assumed Vulcanicus was pulling a Predaking with just the wings going on his back and the rest of Swoop forming an arm.

There were a few Brave figures that pulled the whole split in half to form the arms or legs thing and they were all very cool figures.

A few is an understatement. Each series outside of GaoGaiGar has at least one Combiner with a member splitting into arms or legs, with two that have two members each splitting into an arm and a leg (they even use the same rough template)

The Dino Megazord is a pretty good comparison to what is happening in Cyberverse, with the pterodactyl in the back instead of in the front.

Oh, THAT one. It's such a shame that Hasbro or the KO companies (who were popping-out OSKOs of Bayverse figures like gusto at the time) didn't make an (oversized) repainted version of this toy. I wanted it to be in D&D Tiamat:

Fellow Seibertronian chuckdawg1999 has a video review of WheelGrim, the latest roll and combine set pairing a Dinobot with a non Dinobot character. This one is Wheeljack and Grimlock. This toy came out in the US recently and is appearing at Walmarts throughout the country, first starting in Arizona.

chuckdawg1999 wrote:WheelGrim is another fun Dino Combiner to be released in the Dinobots Unite subline. Wheeljack makes a great pair of pants while Grimlock becomes the torso and they blend well. While it will never win awards for transformation and articulation, it is a fun figure that will make some people happy.

Fellow Seibertronian chuckdawg1999 has a review of Cyberverse Volcanicus. From the looks of it, the figure is not great and it's odd that there isn't a combining version out there since the designers went out of their way to create a new combination design, very well promoted in the show, like the good toy commercial shows of old.

chuckdawg1999 wrote:Going into the specials that will end the Cyberverse series, we were shown the animated version of Volcanicus. The toy representation presented here doesn't combine, but it does transform into some form of a dragon. Something that wasn't shown in the first special that's now available on YouTube. Articulation isn't much to write home about, and the spinning transformation gimmick doesn't always work the way you'd want it to, but as of right now this is the only representation of the character.

Thank you so much for this video review. After watching it...this particular Volcanicus for me, is going to be a hard pass.

In honesty, I was seriously considering getting him...despite my initial not-so-kind reactions when the toy was first revealed. Robot-mode looks nice...and the dragon-mode (in some angles, particularly where you couldn't really tell how the robot-mode legs played out in dragon-mode), it looked cool. For what it was worth (being a younger-kid toy and all)...I admit it was growing on me.

However....at $30+, it's just not worth it...for me. I already got burned when I picked up Cyberverse Skullcruncher recently (I was hugely disappointed by him). I won't make the same mistake again with Volcanicus.

Now...the other Cyberverse Dinobots that are due out (Slag, Sludge and Snarl), I still have high hopes...still looking forward to them.

After watching the two specials, we see that Hot Rod is still quite prominent, as he ascends to one of the main Cybertronian leaders. So an Ultimate figure being available for parents to buy for their kids makes sense. And the Transformers Cyberverse Dinobots Unite Ultimate Hot Rod has been found at retail in time for the holliday season (take that supply chain!). He was found at Target along with Volcanicus, his wavemate. Fellow Seibertronian Chuckdawg has a review of this toy for us, so anyone curious about this big kids toy can check it out below.

chuckdawg1999 wrote:There's a lot going on with Hot Rod that's fun, unfortunately, there's quite a bit that's going wrong. Might be my copy, might not. When the entire point of a toy is the gimmick transformation you kinda need to make sure that works, all the time. If you're a fan there might be something here for you but I definitely can't recommend this for younger fans.

Poor Roddy. I really feel that Cyberverse really did the character justice. He comes into his own, grows and becomes a strong leader naturally. And they didn't write him into a corner and turn him into a complete whiney idiot looser in the hopes that people wouldn't loose their minds when they replace him like the did in G1 s3. But the toys for this version... barf. I mean, the warrior class or whatever it was called was a good well designed toy... with almost 0 paint apps, making it look like a cheap ko. Then there's this. Poor Roddy almost never catches a break. Oh thank heavens for the ss and kingdom commander. ;)^

Looking for a Christmas Gift / Birthday gift for a 4 year old, haven't actually looked at cyberverse so no idea how good they may be for a 4 year old.

Is Volcanicus a good option? He seems to be rather cheaply priced from what I can gather. Does the transformation gimmick work well for a 4 year old?

How about Supreme Shockwave?

4 may be a bit too young. Maybe stick with Rescue Bots for now?

My kid is 4 and Cyberverse is perfect. He didny like the ultimate ones (very finicky transformation due tonthe auto convert gimmick).
The combining megatron and slug set is his favourite. Since its easy to get from one mode to the next and the combining gimmick is fun and works well.

Warrior Cybertronian Starscream is also good and so is one step Megatron, wheeljack and starscream.

Dont get the deluxe toys, they are too advanced. Rescue bots is a bit too easy for 4 year olds.

I found a Volcanicus at Target yesterday, and better yet, had a 25% off 1 toy coupon. I loved him in the show, and even though I'm glad I got the toy and it is pretty enjoyable, I hope he gets a proper toy eventually using this design and transformation scheme. He was just so fun in the show!

Toy itself is pretty neat. I like it.

Also, Slug is still really awesome.

I think Slug is a perfect example of how to do a kids' toy, that's fully poseable and detailed, while still retaining a fairly simplistic ,(?) transformation.

I actually think this is incorrect.

Slug by no means has a "simple" transformation. I would argue the opposite: his transformation might actually be more complex than the SS86 leader Slug. It is a fun transformation, but this is not something that would fit with the much younger demographic. Warrior Snarl is probably a better example of simple but still fairly posable and fun. Slug will frustrate many kids, especially with the legs and the many different steps to transform the torso

Oh, cheers for the update. It's it more frustrating than that recent (large) Hotrod you that Chuckdawg just reviewed?

Anyway, it's just good to see that at least some "perfect" TFs are cooking out (kind of "G1 transformations with good posability), which is the only gimmick I would want, at the very least.

The Ultimate class figures are not that complicated, just the more recent ones have issues with the spring loaded transformation. Slug is complicated but doesn't get in the way or doesn't have any bits just randomly spring load out
