Video Review of Transformers: Power of the Primes Tailgate

Posted by Va'al Jan 14, 2018 at 1:14pm CST 23,834 views
There's been a lot of buzz about the upcoming Transformers: Power of the Prime Battletrap figure - made up of Legend class Battleslash and Roadtrap - as we first reported on their video review here. Part of the same wave of Legend figures, though, is also Tailgate, a repaint with new head of the Windcharger figure from wave 1, which was reviewed in pictures for us back here.

Check it out, and let us know what you think of this second use of the mold. Do you prefer this version over the first? Would you prefer a more IDW styled toy? Is this an upgrade compared to the previous Generations toy in the Thrilling 30 line? Join in the discussion down in the Energon Pub!

Same here. I guess they wouldn't look as cool as TFC Toys' Poseidon but I would buy them if :HASBRO: doesn't screw up totally.

bodrock wrote:I wouldn't be surprised if they were an exclusive boxset later on....

That's pretty likely if they make them at all.
Snap Trap - Sky Lynx retool
Overbite - Rippersnapper recolor
Tentakil - Blot retool
Nautilator - Sinnertwin retool
Skalor - Rippersnapper retool
Seawing - Cutthroat retool or more just using the transformation scheme and assembling the beast mode backwards

Not for PotP, but I suppose it would not be impossible for them to be released as figures in a later Generations line. Either with or without their Headmaster gimmick intact, in the former's case they would simply have compatible engineering with previous Titan Masters.

I'll repeat myself but it still bugs me that in a line with mandatory headmaster and triple-changers at a Voyager class we never got Horrorcons. Hasbro was smoking some weird shit when they decided to skip these guys.

There's a possibility to get them in PotP. They could treat them like Sky Lynx.
PotP alt mode = G1 vehicle mode
PotP robot mode = G1 beast mode
PotP combiner mode= G1 robot mode
Or they swap robot and beast mode which would be pretty cool. Just imagine a combiner gorilla and a combiner dragon. :michaelbay:

I totally agree.

Ok, I'll grant you the hips, the upper legs and the Combiner port, anything else?

Yeah, I read the same thing on TFWiki. Strangely both times they called Blot a heavy retool of Rippersnapper even though they would have been designed at the same time so who can really say which was made first? And that's really all I see, the entire upper legs from the knees to the hips, the combiner peg, and the peg cover. Seems more like a case of parts sharing than anything like retooling.

TF Wiki seems to have very idiosyncratic ideas about retool terminology. Guessing maybe it’s Walky’s preferences manifesting?

For example, there are cases of pretooling or shared tooling but they always treat the first released figure as the “original”. Even if it isn’t the first DISPLAYED figure or is obviously a redeco of a later figure obviously designed first.

The pieces from their crotches to their knees seem all to be the same.

I.e. the upper legs. With the Combiner Peg that's all they share. Ugh, I'll put them together anyway as part sharers, it's possible they share some we don't immediately see like the joints.

The term is a mess anyway, no need for discussion about it in this thread and derail it once again.

Back to Tailgate, he looks decent. Good call on retooling the chest as well as the head.

I hated that damn IDW tailgate. I was also upset that we never got one from the scout class Windcharger mold. So its great Tailgate finally gets some justice. Now all we need is a proper Huffer/Pipes original mold instead of a crappy prime repaint.

Ah yes, because whenever I think of memorable characters from the cartoon, I think of Tailgate! Oh old Tailgate, with his iconic scene where he appears, gets stood on by Trypticon and never does anything again!

I really like this Tailgate. I have a recent third party version, but I just received a G1 Tailgate for Christmas, one of the last inexpensive figures from the first three years I was missing. Anyway, I think this is a nice addition to the line and is better than the Combiner Wars version. Just my take.

What combiner wars version?

And you are so right, just paint and stickers. Just goes to show how different Windcharger and Tailgate look on first sight.

I think he means the T30 one. The CW one is his retool Windcharger.

Yup, T30 to CW went in the opposite direction

I guess he means the Thrilling 30th one or its recolor Combiner Wars Windcharger.

Speaking of Minibots, Beachcomber's alt mode is pretty big compared to Brawn.

It must be a headmaster otherwise the trio will just look lame together. They can easily retool Grotusque. Just remove the tail and wings, give him a new head and hind legs and you are done.

Remove the tail? So you want a Repugnus without legs in robot mode :???:

What do you mean?? There was the huge news post about an employee from amazon who said there will be beast wars box sets with Optimus Primal using the POTP ape face mold but not a headmaster and Megatron using the POTP Snapdragon mood also not being a headmaster and there would be 5-6 figures per box! The guy who claimed all this even saw pictures even though that’s not how that works in the slightest!

Oh wait that was a whole bunch of lies once we found out POTP line main gimmick was combiners. God I still think about that and how full of it that whole thing was.

Nah. Just switch the pointy tail-bits with nubs so that it is more of an insect-abdomen.
