Not sure how much of this has made international news.
http://www.news.com.au/breaking-news/fl ... 5985436806
9 dead, nearly 60 missing, and it won't be over for days yet.
I'm not sure how many members we have from that area, but as the other staff members know I went through a cyclone Christmas morning, it was that weather system that started all this rainfall. I was lucky, these people haven't been.
To me I never imagined this sort of thing happening in Australia, you hear about it elsewhere, but never here.

I saw a good deal of coverage of the floods on Canadian news channels, but our news has also been affected since Saturday by the shootings in Nevada.
The sad reality is that tragedy can occur anywhere, and good people will be affected. While I am glad to know that you are safe now Burn, I feel horrible for those who have lost family, homes, and more to this latest of strange weather.

It's unbelievable. I never imagined anything like this would ever happen right here (Queenslander here).
My mum and brother are in Brisbane now, but they're safe. Thank goodness...
You alright where you are, Burn?

I'm plenty far away from it. We've actually had a good run of sunshine the last few days sprinkled with the occassional short storm.

I could hardly believe it when I first saw it on the news. What a freakish thing to happen. Prayers and best wishes to those affected, I hope they can find some people alive that are still missing.

There'll be a media shit-storm followed by concerned politicians, thronged by charity campaigners that will swallow up the money, misdirect and waste it.
Then the world press will forget, give up and move onto the next "new ****".
I hope that things don't get as bad as they could, and that as few people as possible die. Good luck, Aus!

I live roughly about two hours away from Brisbane, so I'm pretty much safe here. We have had some minor flooding, causing certain roads to be blocked off, but nothing compared to some of the areas most affected.

Unfortunately, I'm not getting as much coverage on everything else going on right now, because the local news is so enthralled with the snow here. Anyway, I'm glad to hear you guys are doing alright down there. Hope it subsides quickly, and with the smallest amount of damage possible, and I'll be praying.

This is sad, you know what's even sadder?
A German immigrant living in that area has just been interviewed on German TV.
The guy's a taxi driver at Rocky Cabs and goes by the name of Jochen Cooper, this is all open information if you see the interview.
So what is the sad part? The guy's a huge dick and actually loves the flood, he likes touring the flooded area, taking pictures and laughing at the people there. he calls them:
scum
the lowest of the lowest low life
etc..
He also says that the victims enjoy the floods due to them bringing variety into their boring lives.
If you see him, punch him in the face for me please.

Sadly there's always a lot of "sight-seers". There were reports of people ignoring Police barriers in Brisbane and heading into the heavily flooded CBD.
Then there's the looting.
I remember after Cyclone Larry, we had a tree down across our road a few doors down from my place. I went down there, on my own, chainsaw in hand, to clear it off the road. Had a few people (in large 4WD's) drive around onto people's yards to get around the tree, and stare at me. Didn't once stop to help.
But don't worry, there are a LOT of positive stories coming out of these floods. Guys like Cooper, there's a few of them around, but they're few and far between. People have converged from across the country to help clean up, to help total strangers clean up! If he thinks that's scum, well good luck to him. But i'm sure he'd more than welcome a total strangers help to clean up.

Is he...y'know - that guy down the pub? The one thats slept with all the women?

I heard on BBC World Service that rain can make Crocodiles broody, and therefore more violent, making the flood more dangerous than it first seems

lol he was some bloke. Such stories aren't uncommon, we're always telling tourists we have crocs in the main street. Just the other day someone got a photo of a 1metre croc sitting on top of the stinger enclosure sunning it's self.
Keeps out the jellyfish, but not "those really big goannas!"
Not sure about the rain but apparently the sound of aircraft flying overhead is similar to their mating call and gets 'em all horny.

If anyone gives a toss, i'm still kicking.
I found internet in a stinky water logged office! :p
No power at home, but also no damage. Just a bunch of wiped out fruit trees.
As TC said, jet engines. Wasn't an easy night, we had mandatory evacuations so my family bunkered down in my new townhouse, which wasn't even set up for me yet! Spent the night trying to sleep on the tiled floor. Lots of fun noises outside, didn't know whether roof was lifting or the garage door was going or it was just the neighbours awnings.
Turned out to be the awnings.

Which house?

No seriously, that in it's self is an interesting story.
Some people know that I just bought my own little townhouse which I was going to be moving into next week.
Order came through for mandatory evacuations for my parents place so we all piled into my not-even-set-up-for-me-let-alone-five-people townhouse to ride out the cyclone.
So my first night in my new home was with the rest of my family and I had to sleep on the tiled floor.
We lost power between 9:30pm and 10:00pm. Just before that I was on Facebook on my phone showing my sister Ryan's photos he'd been taking of Chicago's blizzard. Hard to believe that two people on the one site from opposite ends of the world were both going through severe weather conditions at the same time but being impacted in such a different way.
Once the power went out though that was it. You had two choices, stay up and crap yourself, or try to sleep.
I tried both. I tried sleeping on my couch but it proved too hot. (Would have been lovely to open the window to let the 280km/hr breeze in ...) So I stood up ... and found myself shaking from head to toe. I managed to lay down on the tiles and settled down a little but I didn't really get to sleep until around 2am, even then it was a pretty fitful sleep.
Woke up, inspected the place, no major damage. Dad and I headed home and we were amazed that along the way there was NO structural damage whatsoever, just all the vegetation destroyed. When we got home, found the house in good nick, just lost all the fruit trees.
