haha,perfect is a BIG word (agreed for Unicron Nemesis though, his pics are awesome!)

added light on both sides and above it. i just use a Samsung camera, 10.2 Megapixels

You don't need millions and millions of pixels to take good photos - you need a good lens. 1 Mega pixels will almost fill an A4 sheet. Any cameraphone from the last few years ought to be sufficient if you know how to use it. Learn how to make the camera focus on the part you want to focus on. If it doesn't have a focus function then you need a different camera.

Lighting is VERY important. Generally speaking, you need bright ambient light. A white south-facing room on a sunny day is a good start, but don't be shy about adding extra lights as well. I"ve found direct sunlight is terrible. Someone mentioned diffusion to give ambient light, this gets rid of harsh shadows and allows for more detail - diffusers can be expensive but if you have a really bright spotlight just tape some thin white paper over it and that'll do the trick.

Black on black can often be tricky.

I realised I always have a problem with taking pics of yellow/gold figures. Any advice on this?

Yes they are. The one at the back is a KO. The one in front is from the Device Label.

and in my opinion a bad idea if you want to show detail. It looks nice but if the point of the picture is to show off the details of your repainted black figure it's a bad idea.

Another useful tip: photoshop. Helps to bring out the colours a little if the original picture wasn't so great. You can also remove imperfections in the background with the eraser and magic eraser. Don't use background eraser, it's rubbish.

photoshop elements is the cost effective way if you don't want to drop the loot on photoshop

I don't have a lightbox or anything fancy, I'm taking my pics on a white cabinet right next to an off-white wall with a standing lamp nearby providing indirect, off-white light. I use Photoshop to touch up all my pics, namely bumping up the colors and lighting.

Your set up works very well. If you don't mind some constructive criticism however: the pic shown above isn't lit very well - it's very murky around the bot's mid section. If you could add another diffused light nearer the camera I think it would help but I'm not an expert. It would also reduce shadow, although you may want to keep those in, at least for some pictures. Also, the focus is a little off on some pics. I hope you don't mind my suggestions.
