ah, but i go by the whole thing that Anubis is the ancient egyptian embodiement of death, whereas the grim reaper is the current embodiement of Death, therefore new guy trumps old guy. :grin:

Ok, I just read Milton, so paradise lost, IS fresh in my mind.

The lesser gods of hell, Hades, Anubis, Pluto, etc. were beneath Lucifer for all powerful ruler of Hell. Death (also know as the grim reaper) is Lucifer's son, making him numero Dos in hell.

Death wins.

Also, Lucifer is incharge of Hell, Hell and the Underworld are two different places.

Well that is just nonsensical babble, Christians, the people that believe in Lucifer and monotheism automatically don't believe in old gods from polytheistic religions.

To a Christian it is like saying who is smarter an actual detective or Sherlock Holmes, a fictional character.

Also in Christian belief, Satan is higher up than Lucifer, yes, they are two different entities all together.

Milton (author of Paradise lost) was a Christian. If you had read paradise lost you would know about what I am talking about when I wrote that. And your example is pure crap as well! Sherlock Holmes is of course smarter than any 'real' detective due to the fact that he is a fictional character! People have arguments like this all the time. You can't invalidate a argument just because it is a 'real character vs. fictional character' debate!

Well... that gets kind of shaky... see, there have been multiple antagonists in judeochristian mythology, that many tend to just lump together now because evil=evil, even though there were distinctions between the entities...

I mean, you've got Lucifer, the "Light Bearer" greatest of all the angels, who became full of himself and tried to usurp God. Started a war, got kicked out by Michael. Very reminiscent of themes in Classical mythology actually...

Then you've got Satan, "the Accuser", who was, by all appearances, an angel in God's good graces, who played the 'devil's advocate' in civilized conversations with God, and was given the task of trying the faith of God's children - hence the story of Job.

Beelzebub, "Lord of the Flies", has some wierd history I can't remember anymore, that I think involves changing meanings of Hebrew words or something.

And there was the Serpent, a creepy dude that hung out in the trees and chatted up the ladies, until God took away his legs and cursed his kind to bite and be stepped upon by humans for the rest of eternity. But then, pretty much everything in Genesis is borrowed from Sumerian Mythology, so continuity kind of goes out the window.

And finally "The Devil", a vague, relatively modern term, that is about as elucidating as "That Evil Guy".

So really, they aren't synonymous. If someone was going to suggest that they were, then they'd almost have to say that either the pagan underworld gods (Hades, Pluto, Hel, Anubis, Set...) or the evil gods (not as many of those, Sokar? Loki?) are also synonymous, because really you are boiling it down to an archetype - a symbolic being that represents darkness, death, destruction, chaos, and evil - a projection of our own Thanatos drive.

Oh, and I'd say the Bible trumps Paradise Lost as an authoritative work on Judeo-Christian religion, and in the Bible, Death is one of God's angels, not the son of Satan.

Incidentally, I voted for Anubis, because ultimately, I figure the decison of who gets the job will have to come down to a matter of aesthetics. Both of these guys have good resumes, though Anubis has more managerial experience, so it'll pretty much come down to the interview. Look at their clothes, Anubis clearly knows how to dress to impress, and clearly knows how to carry himself. Death just skulks in, drops his farm implement on the floor and gives his potential employers an empty stare for an hour. Death isn't going to et a call-back.

I was under the impression that Satan was a rank amongst angels until Hi-Satan, along with Lucifer, were cast out of heaven.

Either way, they aren't the same guy.

Also good call on the interview but Anubis and his Jackal head might turn some possible employers away but then again Grim is bones and a rag... :-?

Meh, I'll admit when I'm wrong. So I'll say I was KINDA wrong since you yourself admitted it was a shaky area.

Anubis has to wait for you to die. Death comes to claim you. And hey, Death has been played by Brad Pitt, that has to say something for his character. Maybe we can get Air Bud to play Anubis... :grin:
