How are they not making money if scalpers are buying them? To Hasbro, a sale is a sale.

I think what Megatron Wolf meant was not about Hasbro making money, but maximizing
profits by making the "First Edition" line available at mass market instead of only at specialty retailers such as BBTS. It is a dumb move on Hasbro's part to limit any release so extensively, especially since the rumour is the "First Ed." Cliffjumper is a unique mold and the main line version will be altered in some form, either in robot mode or transformation, I forget exactly.
Also, Hasbro sees no profit from scalpers, they receive only the money the scalpers pay for the figures initially, then sell them on an auction site to see a return on the figure, which means Hasbro loses more money for a figure they decided to only release to a small market. If there is enough demand, the scalper could, in theory, make enough money to see their money back they paid for the figure and a profit of that same price. Which means for every one "First Edition" figure a scalper buys, Hasbro loses money on one figure plus half of another's cost from a potential buyer to a scalper. Again, that's in the theory that there will be enough of a demand, either early on or after the "First Edition" line has ended.
I do like the idea of Hasbro making a line aimed at collectors, which is what the "First Edition" line is technically, but they're going at it all wrong.
Anyway, does anybody see a problem with what I noticed at BBTS:
For Transformers Prime Deluxe Series 01 - Set of 3 - First Edition, its $39.99
For Transformers Prime Deluxe Series 01.5 - Set of 4 - First Edition, its $59.99
For the three, that makes each figure $13.33 before tax/ shipping, which which isn't bad per figure since individually, they are charging $10.99 for Bumblebee, $12.99 for Starscream and $19.99 for Arcee. You save $3.98 that way. Still more than paying $11.99 or so for the figures at Wal-Mart/ Target though.
But for the four pack, instead of offering a similar discount, they add in Cliffjumper at full price plus $0.01. Charging more technically for one extra figure than its original price listed separately. The individual price also jumps from $13.33 per fig to $14.99 per fig. Isn't it supposed to be cheaper to buy more than it is to buy less?
