See, when I watched it back in the day, I only had an extremely vague idea of what the original Transformers were. So basically I thought Beast Wars Transformers were it. I prefer the vehicular/jet designs over the beast modes, but if the stories really are that great, perhaps I should consider watching a couple episodes on Youtube or something.
You do that. When it first started out, it was a bit iffy (since the writers didn't know or care anything about Transformers and had no intention of connecting it to G1 in any way).
Once they realised that a) TF fans actually gave a ****, and a big one, about what they were doing; and b) that in the TFs history there was a ton of backstory they could plunder for ideas and reference, giving their writing that much more richness and depth; the whole thing picked up fast.
As previously stated, 'Code Of Hero' is probably the high point in most people's estimation, but I'd recommend checking out a chunk of earlier stuff first, if only so you can get to grips with the characters. It really is top notch, and as much as I've always loved G1, the storytelling in BW is far superior in my book.

Not quite; Prime and some others were in 3D in the G2 titles and the adverts for the toyline of same. Although we don't talk about that...
