Good day all

I was rewatching ROTF and there is a part where Sam calls Leo something made of "pure champion stuff".

Could anyone explain this? If it's a cultural reference it's way over my head. Not important, but still curious.

I don't think it has a single origin in pop culture, as far as I know it's just a saying.

I don't think it's really a saying.
If I recall correctly, he just thinks of that at the top of his head as a lame attempt way not to insult Leo after saying "dinky internet firm".

Pretty sure it was Sam just being a smart ass. Not that it wasn't deserved, since Leo suffered from a bad case of Small Name Big Ego.

This. This is exactly what it is. ROTF and the first movie had a lot of Sam doing this.

So basically, to sum up what everyone has said, saying someone is made of "champion stuff" in that sense is essentially simultaneously being a smartass and saying that the person in reference is as far from anything resembling a true "champion" as possible.
