QFT! lol, they are supposed to be made of metal after all, and how many cars do you see on the street with dull, matte paint jobs? (probably many if you live in the ghetto but i mean new cars or decent cars :P )

From either a Robot Masters G1 Convoy or KO of the same I believe.

A tidy repaint but too shiny for my tastes.

No it is a fan-made sculpt, someone here on seibertron i believe made them for his prowl and smokescreen alternators i think.

The chrome paint i use is really good considering the price, but i dont know if you will have it over there in the US. Its called "projekt paint" and its by a company called Humbrol.

It just comes in a spray can, its surprisingly decent stuff but it can wear off easily so its not really suited for full-body chroming but for small details like wheels and stuff its fine.

The stuff that I found, when I chromed my Voyager Prime was like that..It looks great, has that reflective look to it, but I had to give it almost a week to fully dry before I could touch it without it smudging or ruining the shine some. And you have to be able to spray it..Brushing it on looks fine, but only parts you spray just really shine and reflect like a good chrome.

Image

You can really see it on his guns, which I sprayed, to the legs and body stuff which I had to brush. You can see it on the stacks in particular how it's reflecting the color of the car it's on etc.

Yep this stuff looks basically the same. It dries a lot quicker though. Its dry to the touch in about 5 hours, but its best to give it another 24 just so its completely solid. Taking a hair dryer to it helps to make it dry quicker too.

I have basically done the same to my voyager prime but im going to repaint the rest of the toy as well to make it look more movie accurate, and hopefully give it a metal-look finish. I might have to re-do the chrome though as i think the masking tape might be damaging it, and no matter how well you mask up theres always one tiny little hole where you get over spray through onto something you didn't want to get paint on.

But no worries its cheap stuff and fun to work with, and if you mess it up it rubs off easy with some enamel thinners.

Ah, right you are. The knobs on the side of the weapon above the handle threw me.

Nope, its car paint, its designed to endure the outside elements so its more than strong enough for a toy. Its almost chip-proof as long as you prep the surface before paint properly and get the paint mixture right as you need to add thinners and hardener to it before you can airbrush it on.

Oh shiny!
I like the silver on him best!
The face looks like metal.
Just a question, does the car paint chip off from plastic?

Your shiny paint looks really good. But i can't really tell from the pic. Is this nearly the same as the chrome grill of MP Prime kind of shine?

Yes, in some parts its better. You can comb your hair in it thats how shiny it is, especially on the doors and front fenders.

Isn't a glossy finish paint harder to get opaque coats with?

I wonder becuase I usually keep the same set of paints on hand. There's 1 bottle of red for instance.

If i want that paint to be glossy, I use a high gloss finish coat on that area. If I want it matte, I use a matte finish.

What, in your opinion, is the benefit to painting with different finish paints, versus coating them differently with a finish coat.

also, did you put a finish coat on the red? if not, isn't it bare paint exposed? I know it's 'car paint' but even cars get coated in laquor, don't they?

No its not harder to get opaque coats with the glossy paint i use, at least i havnt found any difficulties yet as ive only been repainting for a few months so that might change when i move onto larger projects, if i ever get the chance.

Cars only get coated in lacquer if they need it. For example if you have managed to get a high gloss finish straight from the gun(which is very hard to do on a full size car), then all the paint needs is a good old polish afterwards with some t-cut and a "mop" tool and some elbow grease. No lacquer required. It all depends on how well you apply the paint and how well you prepped the surface before hand.

I don't really work with finish coats much since the paint i use is so strong it doesn't require protection. If it isn't shiny enough I'll just airbrush some two-pack lacquer over it, if i wanted a matte finish then that has to be achieved while you are applying the paint. You need to change your technique on how you apply the paint to get a matte finish with the paints i use if you apply it by airbrush, and even then it doesn't always work (as the commissioner originally wanted a matte finish, which i achieved but it was splotchy and uneven, so i managed to convince him that a gloss finish would be better and he loves it).

Are you asking how much the car paint costs?

Well since this is England things are more expensive, and a 1/4 of a liter of paint is £8, then you have to buy hardener and thinners, but i always have plenty of that spare as i work with painting custom cars so i use what we dont use on the cars, but i always buy fresh paint for TF customs.

8 quid for the paint!
Plus Hardeners, OK, I may want to see if I find a good paint maker here in Germany.
