Classics Ultra Magnus (update: Trailer design)

Got a great pic of G1 Op or BW Megs? Whether it's 2-D or 3-D it's welcome as is any other form of art outside the custom figure world.

Well, now that the Ultra Magnus/Skywarp 2-pack is out, it is time to get serious about designing a trailer for him that truely reflects G1 Ultra Magnus, but updated, and I am not the only one doing this. Here is the latest design I have come up with. Let me know what you guys think.

Looks ok, but something seems off. I think you might want to mess with it a bit. Don't make it look too much like G1. The arms in particular.

Actually, my whole intent is to make it look G1, just upgraded a bit.

Here are a couple more design sketches. One is the full armored robot mode, and the other is another shot of the vehicle mode, but from 3/4 back view.

Only problem I see, and its the same with pretty much all the designs that try just put armor over the main bot limbs, is that when you add the lower leg armor the upper legs which are already pretty thin, will look even smaller. He'll end up with a large upper body, large lower legs and feet, and a tiny waist and thighs.

Actually, Magnus’ real waist will be completely hidden. I posted a side-view pic of the inner robot as he would be transformed to fit in the armor over in King Starscream’s Classics Ultra Magnus trailer thread, and the cab body covers the waist completely. The “waist” and hips that you see in the drawing are part of the armor, so the only part that might appear small is the upper legs.

If you look ar Anemis’ Masterpiece Ultra Magnus armor, his real legs are visible and they don’t look too small.

That is a very cool looking design. Like Tentagil, I don't like the thigh area either. Just like Anemis' and the other MP Ultra Magnus that was posted here, the thighs look too small and short. Otherwise, this design is pretty damn good.

The thighs on Anemis’ MP Ultra Magnus don’t really look too small to me, and given that there are other bots that have used a similar combination with its trailer (RID Optimus Prime, for example) to great effect, without negatively effecting the proportional appearance of any of the body parts any real signifigant level. Now, the sketch is definately not drawn to perfect proportion, that is a given—it is definately stylized to a certain degree, and is a rough concept sketch regardless— but based upon the figures I have done, and measurements taken, his overall hight should increase about 2", and his bulk shouldn’t increase too much since the main deck of the trailer (not including the side panels) is going to be about the same width of Magnus hmself, in truck mode, with the shoulder brackets and hip brackets, each being between 1/4" and 1/8" thick respectively locking him in place, so his torso will not be much wider at all, just a little bit longer, as will his lower legs, thus giving him that little bit of extra height.

Now, that being said, coud this trailer be done where he locked into theb armor loke, say, Powermaster Prime or Amrada Overload, and still end up looking like G1 Ultra Magnus? Sure . By all appearances, the trailer mode wouldn’t change, nor would the armor mode (though the thighs, might end up a bit bulkier and longer), but the mechanics of how he combined would. First off, Magnus himself would need to be fully transformed into truck mode, except for the side panels on his lower legs, and the knees would need to be bent down. Secondly, the trailler/armor would need to have its own full hip and leg system, and a “trap door” platform under what becomes the chest (which the hitch is attached to underneath. When transformed into armor mode, the transformation would be about the same as it is now, except the platform would have to fold down onto the top of the hip unit (which would now be able to torso twist—which the current design cannot), the truck cab locked in on the platform behind the chest, then hte shoulder brackets swung around and locked into place, securing magnus into the armor. Either way, his helmet needs to be a separate piece that is secured somewhere under the trailer when in that mode, so it is out of the way. Now, going with that transformation, while it would give him slightly longer and wider thighs, the thighs would not be any thicker front-to-back, and his cab lower legs would end up hanging off the platform he is secured on and is sticking out the back. and, that would probably look worse. I think I’ll take the lesser of two evils and accept the slightly smaller thighs. IMO, it is better than the alternative.

Here are a few color shots including some variants on optic color. I am going to need to know what color optics will look best in the helmet between the three choices—yellow, pale blue or red, all three of which have been seen on Ultra Magnus at one time or another. he had blue in the cartoons, yellow in the DW comics, and in the Japanese Scramble City commercials, they made his armored mode optics light up red. I will be using colored clear acryilic rods to make the opticvs and they will be built into the helmet so I need to know before I begin fabrication of that piece.

Take a look:

I'd vote no yellow. Its no where else in his color scheme. Either other look better.

Agree with GP. The yellow just doesn't look right, for some reason. Ans while the blue looks good, there's a lot of blue on the helmet already. Red would offset that nicely, and also match the inner 'bot's eyes. And if you intend to light-pipe it (hint, hint  ) you could therefore have the red go all the way through.

Unfortunately, there isn't any way to do true light piping because Magnus' head will actually be inside the helmet and the optics of the helmet will actually be above Magnus' real optics, and actually line up with his forehead. Since there won'y be a straight path from back to front for the light to travel through, I can't do light piping, even though I would love to.

actually... (snicker snicker) I wonder, if you did the entire helmet face in clear plastic, then painted all except the eyes, the light might be able to pass through, no?
