Here's what you do. You can pick any characters you want but you can only choose 1 Autobot/Maximal/Minicon(If you choose a Mini-con you can't choose an Autobot from that same series that's why it's listed with the /) and 1 Decepticon/Predacon/Vehicon from each toy line. You have to choose one form of Optimus Prime/Primal (or Rodimus Prime) and Megatron/Galvatron but you can't choose another character of the same faction from that same toy line they came out of.

Example: You choose G1 Optimus Prime and Energon Galvatron. You can't choose another G1 Autobot or Energon Decepticon.

Finnal rule, you can't choose multiple characters with the same name.

(The rules stated specify the toy line - I'm acting on "repaint" hunches here, as Arcee's look in the prequel comic and the prior listing of the movie figures by size class pretty much peg what one of her molds is going to be.)

I didn't use Botcon/TFCC figures as the 'multiverse' aspect of that branch of the line already works in a similar fashion. Also, I avoided Alternators given the licensing issues involved with the line as it is and the fact that the size class never changes.

(granted there aren't alot of Masterpiece to choose from but you could allways skip choosing from there entirely.)

But you said one could choose the same character if he was reincarnated with a different name:

i'll try this but it is hard as I didn't see RiD, and didn't like armada or energon enough to see many episodes or characters I liked in them. The splitting up of G1 seems almost like cheating on this too but since you said each toy line not each cartoon we do get more leeway on this. At least no one tried passing off gestalts as a single character, that always annoyed me on posts like this.
