And to make it worse, just think about where a VF-1 Vakyrie's head ends up in fighter mode. Just sitting under the cockpit, staring forward. Given the very stylized look of any Valkyrie's head (including the VF-1S style head that Jetfire had), in their case they didn't look out of place there. But a much more humanoid looking face would just... well... well...
