Dead Island

I am a HUGE zombie fan, games, movies, whatever so when I saw this article about this game I was stoked for the possibility of a good zombie game. After seeing the incredible trailer (very emotional for a videogame) I want to pick this game up.

Dead Island is set in a resort on an island off the coast of Papua New Guinea and instead of finding massive amounts of guns and ammo, you have to ward zombies off with knives, machetes, or whatever you can find as guns and ammo are very scarce.

From IGN
Rather than run-and-gun their way through a meat maze, players will be forced to scavenge for objects and use them to beat their undead foes into submission. There are precious few firearms scattered around the island (and even less ammo), so the majority of the combat will be intimate. Knives, machetes, bats, broomsticks, pipes – these are your defenses against the horde of infected monsters. It's survival horror with a melee action twist, and it's disgusting.

Dead Island's developers call it a "first-person zombie-slasher/action-RPG." That's a mouthful, and it's still unclear what the balance will be among those descriptors. Players will be able to choose from a cast of pre-set characters, including a former rapper named Sam B (the only character revealed so far).

That's weird, Valve said they weren't working on Left 4 Dead 3, and yet this looks very much like it could be a campaign from that.

Yeah, from the sounds of things, it's Dead Rising's gameplay with Left 4 Dead's visuals.

That went right over your head. I blame myself for that. What I meant was that it looks astoundingly like Left 4 Dead, I realize it's a different game, I was poking fun at the similarities.

And mind you, it's not LFD, because the game is not Left Four Dead. L4D is the official shortened form of the title.

Does the graphics look like Uncharted, or is it just me? I'm actually looking forward to the storyline, I don't just say that regularly, I am actually intrigued by this.

Saw the trailer. Turned me right off.

I realize it's more realistic than other zombie games, but it was gutwrenching to see the kid in the trailer.

I like my zombie games to be more like L4D. Fun.

Bare bones, by-the-book...boring. I mean, you kill your millionth Zombie, then what? Come on, variety is the spice of life, facing the same enemy over and over and over is boring. That's the idea behind Resident Evil's BOWs and Left 4 Dead's Special Infected. One enemy type is monotonous.

Oh, horrible mutant abominations definitely have their place in video games. I won't argue that.

But, I would like this game to put more focus on the situational challenges, rather than newer, stronger Zacks to mow down with an arsenal of increasingly devastating weapons. As odd as it sounds, I want this to be a 'realistic' zombie game.

The sane reaction to the image of dead children is disgust, revulsion, maybe sadness or even fear depending on the circumstances. Considering your reaction to it, however, yeah, if I were you, I'd probably talk to a professional about this.

Yeah, but it's just a video game. I know how to separate reality from a bunch of pixels on a screen that came together to make an image of a person.

The image of a dead child is the image of a dead child. You see the image of a dead child, you aren't supposed to feel excited about it. Real or fake, it doesn't matter.

Knowing how Source works, (Though not knowing how to do it myself) it wouldn't be impossible to smash what you're saying into Left 4 Dead. Really simple mod, actually. Decrease bodyshots to near 0, increase headshots to instant-kill, decrease infected speed to walking speed, don't spawn special infected or tier 2 (Or higher) weapons, and spawn ammo and health drops sparingly. Ultra Realism mode. I wouldn't be surprised if that mod exists already.

That may be true, I'm not going to say one way or the other if it is or isn't. The problem is, there was genuine glee at the mention of a child dying. Video Game or not, that's some scary **** right there.

I realize that it's probably more realistic and more like the movies, but part of what makes L4D and Resident Evil fun is that it's not realistic, and there's a sense of fantasy to it.

I realize that zombies, on the whole, aren't realistic and are fantastical, but leaving kids out of it would be preferable.

Not to mention, a guy who design video games, a father of a little girl, watched the trailer and couldn't finish it. It bothered him that much.

If a guy who creates sometimes sick video games can say "Whoa. I draw the line here." then it must be pretty bad.

It's certainly not something to get joy out of. It's not a selling point, or at least it shouldn't be.

Does that really mean I need mental help?

The sane reaction to the image of dead children is disgust, revulsion, maybe sadness or even fear depending on the circumstances. Considering your reaction to it, however, yeah, if I were you, I'd probably talk to a professional about this.

Yeah, but it's just a video game. I know how to separate reality from a bunch of pixels on a screen that came together to make an image of a person.

Is that why you can't kill the kids in Fallout? Damnit.

And with that, I'm done. This might lead to trouble. Not worth it.

I get joy out of media that invokes strong emotions. Whether they are happy, sad, disgusted etc...

The dead child isn't what makes me excited about this game. It's the gritty and disturbing feel of the trailer. The dead child is just a (vivid) delivery method to get us connected to the media, to make us feel emotions. Obviously, it does a good job. The trailer was indeed very gut wretching.

I can't speak for anyone else, but generally, when I read a book, watch a movie, or play a video game, I like to experience situations which I wouldn't in real life.

EXACTLY! That's the reason I play video games or watch a movie. To see or do things I can't do or wouldn't do in real life. It's an experiece.

Oh, I understand that. I get that point. I love escapist entertainment. But you didn't say the dead girl was what sold you on it, Sly more or less did. And there are plenty out there who would find that to be a selling point.

It's those people that do tend to be scary.
