Do we need a new generations Optimus?
Slap me, kick me, call me dirty names....
But I just don't like (and didn't buy) the classics Optimus (original non cybertronian).
Reasons..
- Arm Kibble - this is probably the main stickler for me. Those huge chunks of truck hanging off his forearms are just too foreign for me to accept in a OP figure. Plenty of other autobots do it but I accept it since the originals had that kind of thing (sideswipe comes to mind). OP never did and I'm not a fan of it here since it's SO large and it's like a big obtrusive cube hanging off his elbows.
- Wierd gun - cmon...OP's gun is pretty iconic and while I give props to using smokestacks innovatively it just looks wrong.A double barrelled blaster is kindof odd, but that big lump of a windvane is too much and too wierd.
- Fake truck grill abs - I think it's a cheap way out when you have a perfectly good truck grill to work with and during transformation you flip it around and hide it only to reveal ANOTHER smaller truck grill to use as his abdomen. I'm actually not a fan of the masterpiece OP in that respect (but ONLY in that respect since the rest is awesome except for his feet that fall off).
- Size - he's a bit too small and should be larger than the other auto-cars.
I know that we usually get a glut of optimus primes as he's kind of like a "snake eyes" figure that keeps cropping up but I feel that we could use a larger and newer release of OP in the generations/classics line. I didn't buy the first one as I just didn't think it would look that great on the shelf with the others.
Agree or disagree?

I'd love a new Voyager sized Optimus that was an improvement.
Sadly, I think we'll get a Deluxe sized on that will be nice, but not good enough to replace the old Classics one.

I dunno, I like th Classics voyager Prime, he's pretty sweet. I agree about the gun, but it's a great mold with awesome articulation and a great transformation.
I picked up the Henkei version, much better!

How big is G2 Laser-rod Optimus going to be when he comes out? I'm guessing that should fill the gap.

It's going to be a Deluxe so it'll max out at Drifts height.
Now, I'm always down for a new Optimus to add to the ball but the lines only on waves 2-3 and we already know of a second Optimus coming out. Hell, the live launched with the WfC Prime! If you want to count the Reveal the Shield Legends, that's 3 new Primes in 6 months and you're asking for another one? And to replace one that is pretty damn near universally loved? It's not going to happen.
You're just going to have to wait and see what we get after TF3.

I will buy every Optimus Prime that comes along. If they make another, larger Prime, I will buy it. I don't really think it's needed though. I really like the Classics Voyager. The Deluxe sized G2 Prime in the Generations line is probably the only Prime we are going to see until the new movie stuff comes out.

If I didn't still have my G2 Laser Prime I would definatly pick up the Generations one, but the Generations one, and it's safe bet Scourge repaint, just don't surpass the originals, IMHO.

Regarding laser rod optimus...
I just looked at the gallery. Not bad (and I'm sure a remake would make him look purty) but for those who have seen pictures of the new one and are being hush hush...
Does his windshield have his name on it like the original? Is that so if his chest gets shot off in a battle and he goes sorting through the rubble later he'll know which one is his?

In the G2 era the motto wasn't "Robots in Disguise" but "Robots who don't care about Disguise but wanna be cool for kids by proudly displaying their names and having bright colors". Of course, that motto was too long so they quickly reverted to the original

Not a sheeple.
Think for yourself, don't let the magic TV box and social media do the thinking for you.
Question EVERYTHING!!
Just because you have a youtube review channel doesn't make you special.
I look forward to attending a Botcon soon only to settle matters with several idiots in person (yes this is a threat).

His windshield is translucent orange plastic with no writing on it. And unlike the original, it actually becomes his chest.

I think we do need this figure. However, I think we could use a Megatron to go with him too. To me, there are never too many Optimus Prime's. Ask my collection.
I'd rather have a voyager class than deluxe, though.

I have high hopes for Deluxe Laser Rod Prime. Prime has a good history at the Deluxe price point.
G2 Hero Prime (Sureshot in the UK) (if I remember was roughly that price or very slightly more)
Armada Supercon Prime (better than Leader Prime)
Energon Prime
WFC Prime
All of which I like a lot.

Yes and no.
[rant]Not only do I like the classics/henkei version of Optimus Prime, he is my absolute preferred version of him. I like everything about how he's built, ESPECIALLY the arm kibble! I swear I've seen one too many custom jobs that have removed his kibble one way or another and the end result looks terrible. Now I can understand why most people don't like them, but to me it gives him a more unique and authoritative silhouette. I also don't mind that he is a bit short for a voyager, I mean he still heights out above most deluxes at least, and since when has the supreme commander of the Autobots needed to be the biggest bot in the bunch? As for the guns, I think they make him that much more worth it! I always liked the idea of a chunk of one's alt mode becoming a weapon, especially if it's BIG!
Bottom line, I like the classics for what they originally represented. Not just G1 characters made better, but different as well. So quit picking on classics prime for not being geewun enough! He's not supposed to be!
[/rant]
However I am not deposed to the idea of having yet another Optimus Prime... I just wish they'd make a Megatron counterpart if they did, so I can even out my collection of Primes and Megatrons. I'm actually pretty excited about the upcoming G2 prime too, since it seems to sport a bit of WFC-esque style to it.

Disagree. They've got his G2 version in Generations, and I'm fine with that.
Unless they decide to go for Pregnant Prime.

It's not that it went out of it's way to look Movie. The original had a red front that shifted to black midway up the hood while the tanker had laser blasts and explosions and flames on it. As until the movie design it was the only long nose Optimus design, it's more like the movie deco is a G2 Optimus update. Still I doubt any will be screaming the it's not "GEETOU" enough.
