i just heard on march 28 "they"(not quite sure who) are asking everyone to turn off all power for an hour to help save the earth.

Actually this will be the second, possibly third year they do this.
It's a way to demonstrate just how much energy would be saved if you turn off unnecessary power.
But yeah, mostly hippy propoganda. I already turn off unnecessary lights anyway and I didn't need no tree hugging hippy to tell me how and why I should do it.
