Help with Darkmount's axe.

I am completely stumped about something regarding the Generations Darkmount figure. I cannot for love of Primus' right thumb figure out how his axe is supposed to be attached to his back in Robot Mode. The instructions are uber vague on this, with one just image that doesn't elaborate more than showing one unspecific arrow. I tried clipping the tab on his back into the groove on the handle/barrel, but the groove isn't deep enough for it to attach, much less stay held in place. There is, however, a slot above this tab that looks like a spot for the axe to connect to, but there's nothing on the axe to be inserted into this slot. How is his axe supposed to be stored on his back in robot mode?

I tried exactly that, but it just won't fit into the groove. It isn't deep enough.
