HFTD Seaspray: Should I keep him?

Postby NuclearConvoy » Sat Aug 28, 2010 8:45 pm

I was at Zellers today and saw a bunch of toys I didn't want and a few things I was on the fence about. Shortly afterwards, while talking with a collector I met in the aisle we found 2 hunt for the decepticons Seasprays and I grabbed one. The damn thing came out to 33$ with taxes (I was expecting much less, the shelf price must have been inaccurately placed) and now, financially, I should seriously return it. I haven't opened the box, because I was busy running errands all day with a friend....so I certainly can return it, I probably need to...but I don't want to, he looks so cool and he looks like he'll fit in nicely with the classicsverse stuff....

So, any thoughts on my annoying dilemna?

I love mine, personally, b ut if you can't merit his cost take him back. There will always be new TFs, and at least here HFTD aren't flying off the shelves.

all in all, it's your decision.

Also remember: Hasbro will repaint him eventually, so even if you miss Seaspray, he'll more than likely show up later as somebody else.

this is a tough one he looks cool and could fit in with the universe / classics but if you return him you can get a few Hunt for the Decepticons figures or Generations hmm I'd say return him so you can go and get some cooler figures

I'm not sure he was worth $21, let alone $33. I'd say return him and wait for the inevitable price drops, especially if you were on the fence.

What do y'all think the likeliness of him being re-released down the road in a more g1-y Seaspray paint scheme?

Maybe I'll return him and get a 12$ Powercore Combiner figure... or just wait and set aside some money for a Darkmount

It is a good figure and worth keeping. I paid about $20 and change for it though. $33 is a bit steep. I assume you are in Canada?

Yeah, I'm in Canada. And even then Zellers is known to generally have not the best prices for Transformers.

Personally I don't feel the love for him that everyone else does.

Eyeballed it in stores, but I rarely buy figures for the sake of buying them.

So I say if u need cash, then return it, especially if u can get him cheaper elsewhere.

I guess I'm hoping for a real G1 repaint of him or something lol

Hmmm... I'd look at online stores and see if you can get it cheaper, or ask someone state side to pick one up for you.

$33 CAD is about $31 US, so that's a ridiculous mark up for a voyager, and this isn't even a online retailer right?

He's great but not at the cost of a voyager and deluxe before tax. I have him, and I don't play with him often, but he is worth having for the sake of my G1 neo collection. However, that old Cybertron Hovercraft scout was also an adequate fill-in.

I'd say return it and hold out for one at a cheaper price. Or see if you can buy it online for less.

I agree on returning it. It will eventually show up at other stores, here in America I see a ton of them, and they are only 20 bucks max i think. If you happen to like the PCC line, I'd say opt for that. However, if you are on the fence of whether or not you want a PCC, I'd wait until you have more money, it's a mixed bag of dissapointment, but overall I'm still going to collect all the PCC and not the HFTD line.

It's an amazing figure worth keeping but I don't think you'll have problems down the road finding. Personally, I'd return it, if the financial situation is bleak, that's a more important issue.

When I first saw it, I was impressed, given how lame the original is. if I had the cash lying around, I'd get one, but I don't. If you really need the money and they'll just refund you, go ahead. If nothing else, you can probably buy it online a little later. Especially since it wasn't a "must-have." Like Battle Hooks is for me.

I'm from Canada too and i saw him the other day in TRU and picked him up and took a long look at him then put him back and walked away.
Couldn't justify the 30 bucks plus tax price tag.
I've already dropped a good number of hard earned dollars on FP Bruticus and Piranacon plus some G1's.
He'll be back with a G1 repaint or go on clearance at wal-mart. As you know Zellers never puts TF's on clearance.
If you need the cash that is FAR more important than a TF. Gotta get a handle on the plastic-crack addiction.......payin the bills and puttin food on the table is more important. He'll be back....don't worry ;)

Which is why the store I was at had 28 RotF Early wave Sideways toys on the pegs still...

I'm gonna return him, use half his cost to buy myself the new disturbed CD on Tuesday so I have new music for my crosscountry trip to my best friend's wedding (the suit I bought for the weddings I have to go to is why I'm so poor) and then the other half on the stuff I need like bills and foods.

Unopened and with bill should result in refund of cash and not just store credit with the span of 4 days, right?

He's quite a cool figure but if you have a big collection you're going to need space in the future for TFs that you really want to get so you'll probably end up selling him sooner or later, especially if you're not sure about him.
If you change your mind I'm sure you could get him again for not much more than you paid this time.

I didn't buy him because he's not really G1 size accurate due him being a minibot suddenly changing into a voyager. I did the same thing with Universe Silverbolt (too big) and Powerglide (exact same situation as Seaspray).

I'm not trying to be a stick in the mud on this, but did you think to ask the person ringing the item up if it was the correct price? Also, if the price was too steep, why did you go ahead and buy the item? As far as returning the figure, I would agree with it if the figure had a defect, but it sounds like you simply made a poor decision with your money.

Well, I don't know much about Canadian pricing, but even I have to say that $33.00 doesn't sound right. I'm thinking it was rung up with an incorrect price. Even K-B here in the states wasn't quite that bad...

If you can't afford it, then do the sensible thing and return it. He will inevitably be repainted, and he's a shelf warmer. Finding him should not be a problem in the future. Wal-Marts here in the states are clogged with him and his case mates, even Target has 'em warming shelves, not to mention TRU. Give it another month and I'm sure you'll be tripping over him, even in Canada.

As for the Classics look...some collectors have said that he actually doesn't fit in all that well. There's enough movieverse design to make him feel not Classics-y enough for them. YMMV but I thought it should be mentioned, in case you're wanting to make a decision.

Personally, I'd take him back. Forgetting my bias towards the figure for a moment, and coming at this from a logical view, I have to say I'd take it back.

1.) It's too expensive, and the price just doesn't seem right.

2.) It may not fit in with Classics as well as you'd hoped.

3.) You're financially burdened, somewhat, right now and food takes the #1 spot over toys.

With all of that in mind, I'd take it back. Now if it was a figure that was ultra rare, one you just felt you couldn't live without (I'm being facetious here, btw), and you had money burning a hole in your pocket and you'll go nuts over it (we've all been there a time or two, it happens), then I'd consider keeping it, but as of right now? Take it back. He'll be there in the future when you have the ability to put him in your collection.

In all fairness to him, we don't know how the shopping trip went. Canadian, American, British, whatever they may be...the person behind the counter can be prickish and difficult to deal with, plus if it's a busy day, sometimes not asking happens because it just slips your mind. Heck, I've walked out of the store several times and never paid much attention until I saw the receipt. It happens, to everyone.

I also think you're being a tad unfair and even unreasonable about the return aspect. The box hasn't been opened or damaged, the toy inside hasn't been touched by human hands, and his return would be in accordance with the store's company policies, so he's well within his rights to return it, and why shouldn't he? Customer satisfaction is one of the biggest parts of retail, and if he's satisfied with returning it, I see no problem. Especially if it hasn't been opened.

If he had opened it, I might say you have a point, but he hasn't, so you really don't. And I don't think Hasbro or Zellers is going to lose any sleep over one TF being returned to the store.

I know this return issue is a bit of a point of contention for some folks, but seriously, he's well within his rights to do so and no one's going to suffer for it. Especially the person who buys it next. As far as they know, it came directly from the case to the shelf. No harm, no foul.

People need to ease up a bit on things like this. It's not the end of the world.

Canadian pricing is RETARDED: 29.99 is a pretty common price for a Voyager scale and Deluxes go for 15$ usually.

Dude, I had gone to bed at 6am and gotten up shortly before 10 and then rushed out to meet a friend who wound up being 2 hours late. I went in looking for thumbtacks and wound up leaving with a Transformer. I think I might have even been still a bit gone from the events of the night before.

Also, damn straight I'm allowed to return something. I didn't even bloody well open the package.

Hrm, well, where I am Scouts are usually more like 9.99~ish, and Deluxes are 14.99~ish, give or take depending on whether or not it is a sale.

Loblwas, when they have a small toy section, sells Deluxes for 18.99, which is why I never buy my TFs from Grocery stores...
