2 scenarios:

-On land (albeit some sort of middle ground between the mushy riverbanks hippos are used to and the slick icebergs polar bears are used to)

-In the water (some sort of magical water that allows them both to be at the exact temperature they need to operate at full capicty)

Who wins?

I'm guessing a polar bear is a little more maneuverable in both cases and 4 ton hippo is slightly larger. Still a hippo has too thick a hide (different than a walrus) for a decisive kill while the polar bear's limbs would fit nicely in the hippo's mouth.

Polar bear gets a taste of hippo jerky but wont live long enough to brag about it to his grand cubs. hungry Hippo mouth beats Polar Bear paws, claws, and teeth.

unless the paw swipes can break the hippo's bones like it would a lion or bull... :shock:

I actually think both will die from their injuries, only IMHO the hippo should take longer.

Hippo. Thick leathery hide, a mean streak a mile wide, and three inch teeth give it the win over the bear.

interesting fight. id say the polar bear can hurt the hippo, ive seen the damage they can do to whales given a few seconds so i dont think a hippos skin will protect it completely. in the water the hippo should win, it can stay submerged, and its only using its bite, if you try punching under water next time you go swimming you will see how much resistance there is underwater. it would take too much power away from the bear, leaving the hippo to attack without alot of trouble.

on land im not sure. if the pear can get behind the hippo and start carving away it can kill it via bloodloss, but then a decent bite from the hippo and its over. compaired to other bears polar bears have smaller heads and shoulders, they are more adapted to an aquatic life so they are more streamlines. this would make it more fragile in a head to head fight, so it would need to avoid getting its head caught with even a weaker bite.

i guess in the end ill say in water hippo wins 9/10, on land the polar bear wins 6/10, maybe 7/10 if its smart.

Bears are godless killing machines. The polar bear is the second best bear, and I think it can take the hippo.

My heart says polar bear cos they are better.

But i think it likely that a hippo would win, cos they are mean bastards who could take down anything.

One bite from the big mouth could take in a polar bears neck and rip his head off.

Either that or a polar bear would go ballistic and relentlessly slaughter the hippo till it was bloody pulp.

No question here. Hippopotamus in both scenarios. The hippo can open its mouth almost 180 degrees. This is large enough to encompass three feet of polar bear flesh. The hippo also has very thick skin (2 inches) and can resist crocodiles with a bite force of 5000 psi (pounds per square inch) as opposed to polar bears with a bite force of about 3135 psi. Contrary to popular belief, the hippo is a very fast animal, capable of moving at 30 mph.

This wouldn't work. Polar bears are adapted for the Arctic. Hippos are adapted for the tropics. Polar bears would die of heat stroke in the tropics. Hippos would be very uncomfortable in the Arctic with almost freezing water and the wrong kind of plants to eat.

I think hippo would win: more muscle, dangerous jaws. Polar bears prefer to kill seals.
