I've since done some research into the model train hobby and found out the most popular scale is HO, except that that's roughly 1:87. It's apparently great for its intended purpose of letting hobbyists model lots of landscape into smaller sets, but such small trains would be rather difficult to transform for customs.
Then I found G scale, 1:24 (actually a range of varying scales around this, that all run on a single gauge of track), designed for outdoor/garden type sets. I'm thinking that HoS customs in 1:24 would be nicely comparable to the Alts scale.
I'd also dreamt of HoS customs that, when transformed into their locomotive modes, could actually run on model tracks too. Unfortunately, real model locomotives seem to have mechanisms that take up most of the interior bulk of the locomotive. Trying to figure a way to stuff those mechanisms into a custom Prime's or Bumblebee's legs would be a tad trickier.. =)
