How Apollyon makes Takara's MP-10 relevant again
Howdy y'all. Well this is one of my first posts from being out of the Transformers collecting business for a long time after selling off my collection. I have recently purchased a number of masterpiece figures, and after watching youtube reviews, I finally bought an MP-10 Optimus prime, tho I went with the Hasbro reissue.
The reason is because the Hasbro looks more in coloring like the cartoon, and it's eyes show signs of life, however after looking at Apollyon ver. 2, I am going to order, I realized that the helmet worn for controlling a doppelganger prime was a pretty cool thing. After rewatching that episode BTW, direct TV, discovery family is running all the classic G1 episodes and GI Joe as well. The thought has occurred to me that If I can get the Takara Tomy, loose or not, I would want that version to play the doppelganger and can add him to my decepticon shelf as well, and use the takara darker colors and lifeless eyed version as the mind controlled Megatron doppelganger.
Of course you could get the MP-10B and do it, but I like the idea that nemesis prime is autonomous, and not a lifeless copy, which is how I see the Takara Tomy version. However, with the helmet accessory from Apollyon, it makes the Takara Optimus relevant again. Funny how one little accessory can add such a great twist to collecting.
Any thoughts?

I'm not sure it has anything to do with relevancy, but rather personal preference. I had the Hasbro MP10 first and was quite happy with it. Then I decided to become an MP completest and snatched up Takara's MP10 the last time it was reissued. And I'm tellin ya, I shockingly fell head over heels in love with Takara's. I hear "dim eyes" a lot, but in the right light, they're actually quite stunning.

I had bought that Takara MP10 with the intention of making his eyes G1 toy accurate yellow, but couldn't bear to take out those clear blue beauties. So I ended up buying a second Takara MP10

All that said, you idea for having a second MP10 specifically to be a drone is a neat idea

Thanks! Glad to be back and part of the community!
So per my earlier statement for this thread, I had taken some pics of my recent collection, I didn't do an update with the Hasbro MP-10, but in the pic with the autobots, he is now sitting in the back pointing out. I had a massive collection.. it was all over the map, from G-1 reissue, to Masterpiece MP-01, and MP-03, and MP-05, to Beast Wars, BW II, Beast Wars Neo, Robot Masters, Transformers Galaxy, and most of all my collection was straight Japanese Takara Tomy.. However, youtube has been very helpful to me since I quit collecting after the sell of over 5 years ago. Anyhow, be expecting me to visit a couple of older threads, and to start another big one coming soon.. It will deal with Transformers Victory. I am just compiling the data for a long and enjoyable read.. you know how I do.. anyhow, this will be an epic thread coming soon, so check it out when I post it late tonight. As always with my threads like that, it will be helpful to grab some popcorn, and drinks, and have a good enjoyable read with links to vids, and images for pure enjoyment and reference.
Here is my Masterpiece collection to date:

Forgive the image above, I had to do a contrast fix from my phone to make the images show up, the blackish blue is actually Blue on my Wei Jiang Bots.. also I have a thread covering the Movie version as I believe that Bot needs some third party additions.. I will be doing a digibash to show what is needed to make it perfect..
However, I want someone to release the movie guns for the Wei Jiang Movie Optimus Prime, I am not sure the ones in this pic someone else took are compatible, and I think that those guns probably don't have the tab for the hand to slot into..

I have some other ideas for this figure that I will address in another thread..
Here is my Decepticons to date:

I am going to order Apollyon ver. 2 once I get paid.

Also, it looks like in comparison to the Ver. 1, the Ver. 2 does have a fixed notch that allows the tab piece to lock into the inner leg, making the leg cleaner. See the pic Above for the contrast, unless it's just mistransformation?? But It clearly looks to me like Version 2 has that leg fixed.

I honestly don't care if Takara Tomy does a redux Megatron.. I prefer the Apollyon ver. It looks more like the Transformers Devastation Megatron then anything else, which is just prime by me.

Here are my Autobots to date: ( I got in my Hasbro Optimus Prime, but It's not in the pic.. I will need to take an updated version once I get those backdrops and Floor Tiles from http://www.toyhax.com.)

Also, got the Reximus Prime (Cartoon colors ver.) coming in the mail.. Just bought him, Can't wait to place him on my Autobot's shelf in Dino Mode!

All that said, you idea for having a second MP10 specifically to be a drone is a neat idea
thanks! I like the term drone.. But I would call the Takara MP-10 the "Infiltrator" Optimus Prime.. as that is what he was used for. Interesting that the infiltrator shows up also in another episode series the Ultimate Doom, where Megatron uses Doctor Arkevil to control Spark Plug and he attacks an Optimus Copy.. so not only does he show up in the Doppleganger Episode, he is also in that one as well, and makes the Takara Tomy Ver. fit even more in line with the "drone" aspect of the classic Cartoon series. Wow! so you ended up with 3 Mp-10s!! that's awesome! I forgot the original Optimus Prime had Yellow eyes.. I remember that his blue in the toy was very close to the Takara Tomy MP-10, but I have to say, the Hasbro Version isn't too far off in color. I do see pics where the Hasbro version is a lighter blue, but upon inspection and comparison to my MPP10 Wei Jiang Version, it looks more like this, and the blue is actually at least on mine, not very light

And the Hasbro has the yellow lights, which to me also shows a sign of life...

While the Takara Missing yellow lights just makes the bot seem like a clone with imperfections.. almost reminds me a bit of the Blue He-man.. only more subtle, which is what you want in a doppleganger copy..

Here is a shot from the episode...both primes next to each other..

IDK, I think that given the Helmet addition, it's not just a single accessory anymore, because with the two Prime's that makes Apollyon a superb addition to the Masterpiece line up even if it is a third party produced product. Honestly, with all the complaints about MP-05 Megatron, the designer of that figure according to the Transformers Wiki, Takara once they decided to go with Megatron, only gave the designer 12 days to get Megatron done, so I understand why people don't like the MP-05, however with 12 days only to do it, he sure did a good job without much time.. If Takara Tomy gives him another crack at designing a more MP-10 friendly scale version, he may surpass Apollyon, and we could get a truly amazing Megatron from the official company.. however it may not include the helmet.. I actually think the helmet was a strok of Genius! I just wish that apollyon came with a mini-gun version of himself..but with the doppleganger bonus from the helmet, you can have both a Hasbro MP-10, and the Takara, and the Nemesis prime on your shelf and feel comfortable with them as canon. I may have to track down the Takara, and the Nemesis once I get up to speed with my other bots I am after..
But overall, for me, the Hasbro Optimus Prime is the Best figure to represent the cartoon Optimus to date in terms of colors, and the blueish clear windshield makes the Hasbro a win in my book.. Takara Tomy's version will always be to me the "infiltrator" copy controlled by Megatron/Apollyon.
See to me, the Takara Version fits that episode with the Megatron Mind control helmet..

Hasbro for the win! Yet, Takara also for the Win!

If I may just play devils advocate, Takara's MP10 is actually the most cartoon accurate. The lights on the roof of the cab aren't yellow in the cartoon (most of the time), his blue actually is that dark (see the screen cap you have), and his windows aren't necessarily blue either. I think its mostly based on personal preference. I made the same mistake, Takara's blue just looks so dark that I assumed that Hasbro's was the closer to toon accurate (until Sabreblade corrected me).

Well, there is the fact that the original cartoon images online are older, and the remastered his colors I have from the Madman DVDs looks more like the Hasbro.. but then again, anything in G-1 cartoon is subjective as the cartoon itself was always inconsistent.. I do remember seeing the yellow on the show a few times, and the IDW comics, and even the Transformers Devastation game have the yellow now.. It's funny tho, I was misremembering allot about the show until I started watching it again recently on Direct TV (Discovery Family). I absolutely love your MP-10 collection! fantastic! I have to highly recommend the MMP10 Wei Jiang ver.. totally awesome~!

i've never seen a perfect scale Optimus or Megatron. Optimus is an inch or two taller or megatron is.

The yellow cab lights on Optimus Prime consistently show up in The Transformers: The Movie. Otherwise, they were almost always omitted in the regular cartoon broadcasts. The blue on Hasbro's Masterpiece Optimus Prime is a bit to bright and saturated for cartoon accuracy, but it looks nice. The darker blue color of Takara Tomy's MP-10 is indeed much more accurate. However, in the show the blue looks a lot more faded, while it's quite rich and deep in the figure. I think of it as Prime after having a deluxe car wash.
I too began with the Hasbro version of MP-10 simply because I wasn't yet buying Takara-Tomy's Transformers releases yet. Later on, when it became apparent Hasbro was falling way behind on Masterpiece releases, I jumped ship to Takara-Tomy. Soon after, I traded up the few Hasbro Masterpieces I owned for their Takara equivalents. I couldn't be happier with Takara's MP-10. Something about the paint, plastic, and finish on it makes it look just that much more like a high end collectible as opposed to a "toy."

Re: How Apollyon makes Takara's MP-10 relevant again
IDK, I mean you all make valid points.. Personal preference is definitely at play in anything regarding this topic. For me however, I have the Madman DVD sets, which remastered the cartoons, and in that, the blues on Optimus and the reds, seem more in line with the Hasbro version I have. My Blue isn't as light as I have seen some online, or in youtube reviews, it is maybe 1 to 1.5 shades lighter, but not too much..
I did find these images, and I am posting the website link so you can see I didn't manipulate them to back up my position.
These are from the Madman Remastered, which I think is a good standard to go by if you like the look of MP-10 from Hasbro over the Takara Tomy. I am just saying if you wanted to have both and make it seem like they are both valid rather then thinking about having a copy that's not wanted, it could be that the Takara Tomy version would be the doppleganger.. If I owned the Takara Tomy and not the Hasbro, I would definitely remove the eyes and paint them, cause as is, and even with the right light, it still seems to me as being dead inside.. But that's just me.. When I saw the Third Party Megatron, and specifically the Helmet, I was stunned.. I thought, wow! That was awesome.. such a small touch to the figure, but a huge bonus for someone like me who may decide to get the Takara Tomy (I'm a bit of a completest too) and get that Optimus Prime for my collection.. Only before I was content with the Hasbro, now because of ordering the Apollyon figure, I think I now want to get the Takara Tomy Prime, just because I can now have a cool reason to put him on my decepticon shelf.. albeit in a robotic non-natural pose to simulate the look of him being a remote controlled copy of prime..
anyhow, here are the Pics and links..the blue is pretty bright.. it may be toned muted, but I think it looks pretty close to my Hasbro Figure. Only problem is you are right, there is no orange or yellow on these pics.. but then again, sometimes it would be there.. I wish Madman would have done them in yellow all the way through for a bit more consistency since they fixed allot of problems in the DVDs. but hey, you are correct.. the only thing consistent about G-1 was it was always inconsistent.. LOL

But overall, the Blue in the series did sometimes look darker, but I chalked that up to being in a shadowed area.. I mean I like the darker blue.. but I also think the Hasbro nailed the Cartoon feel with their release. Only, Roller is toy accurate and not screen accurate. I had misremembered this whole time that Roller was Blue.. but that was only the toy.. Takara Tomy got it right with the silver colors.. I had no clue till I rewatched the 3 part first pilot..
If I did get the Takara Tomy, I would buy a Decepticon Rub symbol (reveal the shield heat activated), so that I could make that like a decepticon in disguise, and place it on the back of the gun storage area.

anyhow, here are the Pics and links..the blue is pretty bright.. it may be toned muted, but I think it looks pretty close to my Hasbro Figure.

I'm not a 100% on what figure he came from, but probably. I got it from my buddy who's favorite anime is Eva and he collects toys too (once upon a time anyways). He had a little box full of accessories and he told me to go nuts. They're all mainly from Chogo and Revo's I think.Delta Magnus wrote:shajaki wrote:
