How Far Will Your Collection Go?
How Far Will Your Collection Go?

im collecting all beast wars/beast machines, and masterpieces. with that, G1 and their classics counterparts. but it occurs to me that i havent thought how far the G1 collection would go. in general i never thought of it going past the american rebirth, because if i decide to go the headmaster/victory/masterforce route... oh man is that a LOT more toys. not only that, more expensive and harder to find.
im contemplating doing a AEC/animated/prime collection as well, but thats far off.
so how about everyone else? where does your collection start and end?

For example - Skids. Ever since the Classics line debuted several years back, I've never had a Skids to fill the hole. I had used Energon Tow-Line as a stopgap, but always wanting a proper Skids. Now I have one thanks to Hasbro and I'll never need another, even if they make a different Skids in 4 years, I will probably pass on it.
Same with Gestalts, thanks in most part to Third Parties, although Hasbro is making some tempting ones.

But, I usually have somewhere around 150 to 200 at any given time. I buy, sell and trade a lot. Some toys in my collection are permanent mainstays. But others are just completely transient.

There was a point where I collected every and anything.
It was a model for life that could not be maintained. Setting cost aside, the dedication of time and space became too much. I also had a very dire warning of what irresponsible collecting/hobbys looked like in the form of my father who wasted a lot of time, money, and opportunity in his pursuits.
I truly enjoy my hobby and my collection, so the question came to bear at one point: how much and why?
I made several decisions, so easy, most hard about what to keep and what to sell. I had to determine what it was I cared about. The answer was creating a modern Classics collection of G1 characters.
But I also had numerous other lines to determine the fate of.
I decided to keep my Armada Trilogy stuff, but to cut it in half, selling the inferior duplicates between the US and Japanese lines.
I decided to keep RiD because it was small, but to keep only show characters.
I decided to keep TF Prime because it filled the Movie/Animated design niche for me.
I decided to keep MP figures, but only official ones. 3rd party MP is out for me.
I decided to keep G1...for now.
Almost everything else went. Movie, Animated, Beast Wars, Alternators, Titanium, G2, Shattered Glass, eHobby...gone or going.
It's been difficult at times, but no joke, my sales paid for the deposit on my home.
That's my F'ed up perspective on it all.
It was really hard being at the center of a group of collectors and friends and being the guy who all of a sudden said "no" or "not for me". Thankfully everyone was really cool about it and hopefully I never rained on anyone else's fun in the process.

I've always been an Armada fan at heart so that will always be my mainstay collection, intertwined with obtaining Microns. The Takara Micron Legend figures and a few Hasbro Armada figures remain, while obtaining the Microns throughout the years is not space consuming, but rather $ consuming.
Animated is another mainstay and will be expanded upon via the HasTak figures I have yet to obtain and 3P.
I'm a huge Transformers IDW fan and an avid customizer, so I've been tackling that over the past year. I can't believe I've made an entire shelf out of just customs. Not sure how that's going to last, but I aim for comic accuracy so 3P will generally win over HasTak/FunPub when it comes to non-customized IDW toy. HasTak stuff like Voyager Springer is the way to go - the FoC Wreckers, not so much.
Then there's trivial **** like having all the Blurrs collection and doing with WFC/FOC like I did for IDW.
I want to get into Beast Wars and further into that but that's just so far down the list.
Classics, Movies, MPs... that stuff just doesn't really appeal all to well to me anymore.
