Not, I will admit, that I was planning to get this in any case... (I still love my Classics Prime and see no reason to replace him.) But I've been looking at the pictures, and I watched the review... And I just don't get how people can like this?
The robot mode is decent, and I won't say much against it. Heck, I'll even complement it and say what they did to hide the wheels on the legs was quite innovative.
But the truck mode... Man, that mode just sucks so much! From the front, the window section does nothing to hide the split in the middle, and looks just terrible on what is supposed to be an Earth truck. If it was some futuristic space truck, sure, whatever. But on an Earth mode Optimus Prime? It just looks like crap. They really should have found a way to smooth out the front windows, as well as bridge the gap above the windows along the top of the front.
And from the side... His cab looks like a big, featureless red square. Okay, it maybe has a few token panel lines and a few token blue bits painted in... But it just looks so bland and featureless, making it look like a big old nothing.
I just don't understand the praise some are heaping upon this... Give me Classics Prime and his mighty forarms any day. His robot mode looked good. (While happy to poke fun at them, I was never terribly bothered by the "arm shields.") And his truck mode was real nice... it looked like a truck rather then just a bi red box!
Edit: Just fixing a few minor typos I noticed. No content changed.

You are not alone. I keep trying to see the positives in it. I keep trying to see what makes others like it. If there wasn't that split window design on the front, I think I could really like this. But it is just too glaring! Maybe I could forgive it in bot mode as being IDW's influence. (I still wouldn't like it.) But it is far too much an eye sore in truck mode, IMHO.
I'll keep trying. I like to keep an open mind. But I don't think I can be convinced in this one...

I've posted repeatedly that I'm not a fan. He neither screams Optimus Prime nor IDW to me.
For those who like it, great - I hope you enjoy it! But this doesn't come close to surpassing the Classics voyager Prime in my book.
Actually... does anyone have comparison shots of TW Prime with Classics Prime? Now THAT's a gallery I'd like to see.

They were briefly held side by side in both modes in the video review. While the Toy World one does stand taller in robot mode, the were surprisingly not too dissimilar in size in vehicle mode. (Although to hear the reviewer talk, the Toy World one was still significantly bigger as a truck, too. Maybe it is, but just didn't come off as such in the video.)
And apparently, as a point of interest, the Toy World one is made to be compatible with the Fansproject trailer for Classics Prime. But I don't think they look good together, the trailer seems to sit too far back from the cab.

Hehe, I thought I was the only one who wasn't sold on this thing. I guess I'm not alone after all
.
I agree with most of the comments. The bot mode is OK in an IDW-ish kinda way (which I was never a fan of) but that truck mode is just terrible. It's like a Rubix Cube on wheels and doesn't resemble a real truck IMO.
Henkei Prime kills this thing in both modes in my opinion, even if it is a smaller size.

The only pic I have at the moment, sorry.

Your mileage may vary. I am sorry that TW IDW Prime is not up to some of the expectations of people here. But he is great in my books, and a timely update for the aging classics mold.
Even with Orion around, if Hasbro were to make a Voyager sized version of the IDW Optimus, I will still get the Hasbro one.
Orion has it's merits and best way to judge a toy is to have it at hand.

You are right and wrong. Yes, people would like it because it would be probably a quarter of the price. No, I would still not buy it because it is too large

If it had been a Hasbro release, and thus (as others have speculated) roughly a quarter of the price, sure, I'll admit. I'd bite. After all, I have all these:

And for a Hasbro price, he'd be a good addition to that collection. Heck, since these photos were taken, I've added the Legends class IDW style Prime to that collection, so while not a huge fan of it I'm obviously not completely opposed to the design.
Doesn't mean that it would ever replace my Voyager Classics Prime (who is not pictured here as he is with his Classics brethren) or that I wouldn't still think his truck mode looked like total fail. Hell, I'd even go so far as to say that Deluxe Classics Prime has a better looking truck mode, and before now if you'd ever told me I would type those words, I'd have said you were crazy!

It is pretty accurate to the comic design in both modes, especially in truck mode and damn does the truck suck. I still can't believe Don Fig designed this.
While I agree that this is indeed a pretty good job, I would never ever buy this. It just looks ugly to me, ugly but well executed.
The thing is; however, it's not as "tall" or thin as the comic design. The details and parts are all there, but they're all too fat and puffy.
I would jump on this if it where based on the original idw Prime design

No, not really. Look again, you will notice that the only thing MP 10 has in common with this (apart from being G1 Optimus Prime) is that it uses the same fold out gun.
- the arms are different
- the legs are different, especially the upper part which is made up of the gas tank
- the front wheels become part of the shoulder joint
- and generally the design is made to evoke a Gundam type design feel, with pieces of armor covering a pretty technical endo-skeleton.

Most of Don's designs where long and gangly, just look at all those that appeared on the retailer incentive comic book covers. IDW could have used any designer but went with Don at that particular time.
Anorexic Transformers = No thanks!

I would doubt they would still go with his designs these days as there are better artists out there working on Transformers lately.
In time Optimus Prime will get yet another redesign, possibly as a red and blue rig which will make the Toyworld version a mini-masterpiece moved to the back of some folks displays in favour of the new one, but for now this very current and very awesome take on everyones favourite leader will take the lead!

Yea so? I know this is based on idw's second Optimus Prime Earth mode design. But I'm referring to the one I posted pictures of. The idw comics did not start with the "Ongoing" title, but with the story arch "Infiltration". And Optimus made his debut on Earth in Infiltration #6 (before that in Stormbringer #01). That design, like all other earth designs of the main series arches (save for pre-earth Megatron which was a Don design) where done by E.J. Su.

That is the original idw design. And then after four years, Don redesigned everything with his new style.

Re: Toyworld TW-02 Orion (IDW Optimus Prime)
If Hasbro did one of these, I wouldn't buy it because it would use the same **** colors used on this toy (the brighter red being the main thing I take issue with, ref the image of him next to Henkei Prime to see what I mean on that). I *might* buy a Takara version, but only if it were covered in that pretty paint they tend to use (paint being something this cube is quite sparse on).
As for that IDW image, this toy looks NOTHING like it. That IDW image has curves and doesn't contain his tires inside his legs in truck mode. In truck mode at least, that image looks way more like MP-10 than it does this toy. I do not believe that image/version of Prime is what this toy was meant to represent at all.

You should maybe read my post as that is what I'm saying.
This Orion here is based on the SECOND (2.) IDW Earth-mode Optimus Prime design, the one done by Don Fig for the Ongoing series in use since 2009 till today.
The one I posted is the FIRST by E.J. Su, which was used from 2006 till 2009. And as I said, I would buy this IF IT WAS BASED ON THAT DESIGN! I never claimed that this toy was based on it, all I stated was that I would have preferred that it would have been based on the original instead of the Don version.

I got mine on monday from AcesToystore
I understand why people are divided on this but I have to say I love this figure. the engineering on it is crazy, like masterpiece level. articulation is fantastic, and red looks fine in hand. I would definitely pick up other products from toyworld.jp, based upon this. my one gripe is the cab windows falling out so easily, tempted to glue them

Re: Toyworld TW-02 Orion (IDW Optimus Prime)

Ah, gotcha, apologies for the misunderstanding.

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I am that which is, which was, and is yet to come.
And you will know my name is MEGATRON when I lay my vengeance upon you!
