I just wonder why looks matter so much. I never have been able to figure that out. i can't get a gf just because I'm short. I know I'm patetic.

Being shorts not so bad, I cant get a bf because im too tall!
Everyone says looks aint everything, but they really count for so much, especially with the whole first impression thing. Sigh. Theres probably a load of genetic reasons for being atracted to good lookin people...

Because without the illusion of "good looks" it would be hard to sell you products to make you look like that.

It's even harder when you're a woman (right, JP?). Looks accounts for a lot of your self-worth, unfortunately. I'm ok with my appearance, but I plan to change a few things that bother me later on down the road if I have the money. Shouldn't care, but I do. I've accepted most of my flaws, though, since there's not much I can do for some of them.

I do my best to let the women I know know that I don't really give a **** how they look. But 99% of the time, they outright refuse to listen. So I'm not too sure it's entirely a cultural thing.

Well, men should care a LITTLE how we look. So should we. It shouldn't be the most important thing in your life, but there's no reason to absolutely neglect your appearance completely. About 85% of the time I wear makeup, but I don't have a lot of time to fix my hair in the morning. I try to wear cute clothes...but it's not really to please my husband. I do it because I like to look nice. Most women that look like absolute slobs aren't gonna get a lot of male attention...unless you like that sort of woman.

I'd rather a homely but sweet girl than a shit-hot but obnoxious one. And I doubt I'm the only guy who'd say so. I only place any emphasis on looks when I'm out dtinking and take an urge for something fleeting.

Also, girls should care a bit about what men look like, it is nice when men put some effort into their apearance, it's not so hard as what girls have to everyday, so a little effort goes a long way with guys. I used to know one guy that washed his hair in soap becasue he thought actually using shampoo and conditioner made him look gay, what a freak, to my knowlage, he's never had a gf, wonder why.
Things like being tall or short, can't really be helped unfortunatly, I love high heels, but I cannot wear them, as I look like a giant....

I've already mentioned my grooming habits in another thread, but suffice to say I could replace Don Johnson in Miami Vice at a moment's notice. With a time machine.

There is no reason you have to be either hot and obnoxious or homely and sweet. I know plenty of nice pretty girls and unfriendly ugly ones. I think I'm kind of in the middle, not beautiful, not hideous, just average. With an decent personality.
Guys definitely should put some work into grooming. I love a well-groomed, good smelling man. I've had to work on my husband a little in that department. But show me a man with some nice clothes, cologne, clean fingernails, and OOOH!

Good looks aren't an illusion, they are a perception. It has more to do with confidence than anything.
Short, tall whatever you look like really doesn't mean that much to most people(unless you look like you emerged from a bomb shelter after spending 2 years of non-bathing) . You perceive yourself in a certain manner
and in a way that defines you. If you look like you are scared anytime a chick(or dude) looks your way, that's just not gonna get you very far with the opposite sex. If you need practice talking to girls, hit up a strip club. Those girls only want you for one thing, but at least they talk to you before taking your dollar, and it's good practice and a boost to the ego.
By the way, tall chicks are super hott.

There's a reason you can't get a girl, and it's not your height. Three guesses of what it is, and the first two don't count. Here's a hint: It's in your post.
If height mattered so much, there would be no short people at all, because none of them would have been able to breed.
Stop being insecure and self pitying and go up to some girls and make them laugh. Then some others. Then some others.

I actually heard one theory that in a few hundred years there will only be really tall people, and really short people, like totally separate subspecies. Because aparantly tall people like tall people, n short people like short people. That would be wacky.

Persoanlly, pretty people scare the living daylights outta me. If a hot guy came up and started talking to me I'd be too freaked out to respond. But the normal guys who talk to me all the time and who I'm comfortable talking to and I get to know, are usually the ones I start to get crushes on.

I didn't say that girls were either attractive OR nice, I just said I'd go for the latter over the former. I know plenty of people who are both.

Heh, looks like the generation is degenerating, how ironic. Why do we not just see not what is on the outside, but what is in the inside? Maybe our world would actually become a better place.

Is that not rather nieve? I would love it if people liked me for who I am, and not blank me becasue im rather shy and not so hot. Similarly, I would like to be able to know what people are really like inside too, but thats not gonna happen. From the few people I really know well, the shyest least outgoing people are the nicest, and often funest people once you get to know them. The more confident people I know, are actually not so nice, they seem to be rather selfcentred. The problem is people are just more likey to pay attention to louder more in your face people, than quiter ones. Im sad now.

I'm an odd animal, in that people tend to assume I'm confident, seemingly based on my dress sense (yep, odd, I know), yet I'm anything but. I'm usually pretty quiet, and reserved. But I'm told I seem confident. Still doesn't help me much.

Well it was after i made her laugh!
A guy who makes others laugh on purpose is a guy everyone loves to be around. If you're healthy and don't look unkempt and like you don't care about yourself, looks don't really matter.
