Anyone notice how the scope, stock, and silencer are gunmetal grey on one page and black on the other?

Too many gaps and moving pieces. Its nowhere near as clean as I expect for MP level price tag. It looks great if you are looking head on, but any other view (to me) is very cringe worthy. Meh.
Now, if when the final product images come out, and they have cleaned up the look of alt mode a bit, I'll buy this and keep it in gun mode, hung on the wall like I used to do with G1 Megatron, way back in the day.

Fair enough but I like them more than the skinny legs on the official version. Megatron should convey strength and power imo, and you can't do that if you're skipping leg day.

Well, if you like Despotron, and you like your Megatrons with a bulkier build, that's fine, but you shouldn't judge the MP because that isn't what it's going for. It's trying to be cartoon accurate (as that is the point of MPs in the first place), thus you simply don't like the G1 cartoon model. And that's fine. Personally, I'd like to get both.

No, that's the new point of the Masterpiece line, and I don't like it. Before, they were simply supposed to be the best all around version of the character, but that has now been dropped. Some are okay with the change in direction, and that us fine, but I'm not.

I'm very confused. I thought the only time Masterpiece wasn't an attempt to be completely accurate to the cartoon - at least, in terms of original uses of the mold - was MP-03, with Starscream being an attempt to replicate the look of the fighter jet he turned into rather than the cartoon model. Every other MP mold I've seen has been an attempt to be cartoon accurate.

I realize that this Megatron is trying to copy to copy the animation model and it's doing a great job at it. I just don't like that that is what it's doing. Of course if one likes it to be exactly Sunbow this is the Megatron for them. So the look is going to be totally subjective.

No, that's simply not true, it's been quoted that from mp-10 to around (before) mp-ultra magnus the goal was to create the ultimate version of the figure, hence why mp-10 and those that follow deviate from the 'screen-accurate' look so much.
I believe around the time that um was made, a new design team had taken over and started to go for the smoother cartoon accurate look, and ironhide is when it was really taken to the next level (possibly by another design team), with almost no surface detailing or anything and has carried through to the rest that have followed - save the bw figures since the cartoon accurate look requires lots of textures and such.
I am not a G1 fan, please treat my opinions as such.

I'd be very interested to see those quotes. "Ultimate version of the character" sounds to me like business/interview talk for "We're basically recreating the cartoon models".

It was a quote from the original designer of mp-10 and should be somewhere on here, and if that was the case, then why did the 10-20 figures deviate from the smooth faces look? No matter how you look at it, the smooth faces look is a recent shift and was never the original design ethos of the line

I hear ya about the amount of pieces, but I actually have a great deal of faith in these new MP's. After handling the new MP Hotrod with his locking tabs, I bet TT is putting a lot of extra care into making this Megatron a solid figure. The transformation looks daunting, but that's the only thing that worries me.Ironhidensh wrote:Too many gaps and moving pieces. Its nowhere near as clean as I expect for MP level price tag. As for how the torso looks, I don't see any issue. I am actually really loving all the clear colored pieces he has for all his stomach doo-dads. Looks beautiful. The top view of the torso is puzzly, but so long as its solid I ain't worried

I wasn't arguing about the smooth faces look though. I never brought that up. To me that's just some extra detailing that comes about either because of the vehicle mode accuracy or... because it looks good or something.
I just really don't buy the whole 'ultimate version of the character' when I look at any MP and see nothing but an exact representation of the G1 cartoon character model. And arguing that non-smooth surface detailing makes it not that is just extremely silly imo.

Desporton is a good looking figure with lots to like about it, but I still like the official better.
Megatron as a character, and even with the original design, looks badass.
So I don't see him needing to be bulked-up at all.
I'm assuming the transformation makes the aesthetic elements difficult.
The back of this official figure isn't perfect, but the rest is definitely on point and imo makes up for it.

It does. And it reminds me of the clear parts in Prime's pelvis, Shockewave's chest, Wheeljack's wings, etc. So it works in that regard, too.

Yeah. I can also come up with a backstory, but I don't like Megatron to tower over Prime.

Personally, Despotron's super wide legs serve only to remind me of this:Ironhidensh wrote:I still like Despy better. I like the thicker legs, as I think it gives Megatron a more badass look.

Whereas the new MP's legs look far more naturally proportioned to how a normal person's legs would look.
Even in Dreamwave did he keep his streamlined, non-obstructive legs:
