collecting rules seem kind of stupid to me.

I did this years ago....
1. Must be a Convoy
2. Must be a rare Convoy
3. Has to be under 100 made ( Takara made 100 Gold DOTM Mechtech Convoys)
Sadly I still don't save money since everything I want is expensive!

I wouldn't call it a "rule" since I break it regularly, but my GOAL is to start focusing on mostly Classics-verse figures.

Re: My new collecting rules: what's your's?
I think my collection dictates my collecting rules rather than the rules dictating my collection but still, here goes!
I collect book style Japanese G1 reissues, G1 and BW leaders/citybots, animal based G1, Classics, WST, Season 1 Beast Wars and Grimlock, Ravage, Razorclaw and Steeljaw figures.
Some of those define themselves but in the case of Classics I collect characters that appeared in the G1 cartoons up to Masterforce, only 1 version of each character providing they're roughly the correct size.

1 - Collect all in-show characters
2 - Non-show characters depend on taste.
3 - Scale....kind of matters. These depend on whether or not there's another version available.
These rules do not apply to the movie verse, since I frankly don't give a crap.
4 - No toy that resembles a G1 character but is not a G1 character will go on my neo-G1 shelf.
5 - No collecting a toy that's not show accurate unless there are no other versions available. PRiD Airachnid's a perfect example of this.
That is all.

JustPlainME wrote:1. The collection will go no farther than my bedroom, meaning it will not spill over into other rooms.
2. Only Generations / Classics style G1 type characters that I recognize or are otherwise a very good-looking figure over-all. I include War For Cybertron figures.
3. They must be GOOD products...The recent IDW Bumble Bee figure is FAIL-CRAP. For SHAME, Hasbro. Really!
4. I'm sorry, but I don't like the live action movies or the toys associated with them, so no on those.
Edit*
5. Cry over the MP figures I will not own.
In the 11 months since I wrote that, here's how well I did following my rules:
1. I did really well here. If I needed room for a new figure, I just packed one away that I wasn't too keen on.
2. Ok here as well. I'm thinking about packing most of the WFC/FoC figures away though. I'll keep a couple of them up like the seekers and Blaster. Maybe Grimlock.
3. Ok here (maybe). As in number 2, I just found that I simply did not like some of the WFC/FoC figures as much as I thought I would. It's not really what I was going for collection-wise. In the absence of good Has/Tak product, I have substituted a few 3rd party figures (as money permits).
4. Absolutely no problem here.
5. Money hasn't been as tight this year but still snug. I have picked up a few MP's when the cash-flow is slightly more abundant. I have decided that I am going to limit myself to Season 1 characters in this line so that I don't feel obligated to get all of them and to ease the wallet strain. Ultra Magnus is looking sexy though, but I think the price will keep that temptation under control.

I wonder how many new collectors of Transformers have their mind set on exactly where they intend to go with it, or just throw themselves into the massive pool of plastic loveliness?

Setting out rules and sticking to them can always problematic. My collecting of things Transformer related has been reeled in a little lately, what with rising costs of living, no pay rise to reflect said rising costs, oh and having a little boy! Yes Im skint!

Looking through some of the other posted rules, I can agree with many but when circumstances dictate, you need to focus on the real life things that matter.

My collections and 'rules' are..
Classics
Generations style, Neo-Classics, Deluxe/Voyager/Ultra scale, 3rd Party accepted, mould sharing accepted, no muliple characters new or 2nd hand, all figures complete where possible.
Masterpiece
Official/KO Hasbro/Takara, no 3rd Party accepted, new or 2nd hand, all figures complete where possible.
Out of all my various figures across different eras/lines where a character has yet to have a figure created, I will use a character from an older line, repurposed as needed until an official or affordable 3rd Party one becomes available.
I was picking up a set of screened TF Prime characters, with only Breakdown, Nemesis Prime, Gaia Unicron and Jet Vehicon needed.
Before Masterpiece I was collecting Alternators/Binaltech figures and going for the full collection of all characters released, but then my Classics collection took over, so kinda gave up, more so now as the Masterpiece line expands.
Some people say rules are meant to be broken...
