your favorite movie openings
- Motto: "Don't do drugs, beer's cheaper anyway!"
Yes unlike all the other movie/film related threads this thread doesn't soil itself with "what's your favourite movie" but just pics the finest and best part of a movie, the opening.
So please post your favourite movie openings, note not show openings but movie openings.
Werner Beinhart probably Germany most successful comic character.
Batman (1989)
Spider-Man 3
And yours?

Event Horizon, if nothing but for the opening theme and the credits being sucked into a black hole.

Issue 2: Home Sweet Home Invasion also for sale.

I'm going to go kinda old school on this one, but that's because, well, I'm old.
Apocalypse Now. No credits, no title. Just the movie. Pure. Awesome.

Equilibrium. I would never have thought a gunfight in the dark could be so awesome.

For anyone who hasn't seen Spotlight: Sledge (and why not?!), my gritty and dark fanfiction piece "Holiday" is posted here.

GI Joe the Movie. The intro with that song is better than the whole movie.

Re: your favorite movie openings
I'm shocked that nobody has mentioned Star Wars.
The opening for Superman and Superman Returns. When I saw Returns in the theatre, it was like being taken back to the first time my parents showed me Superman on vhs. It was awesome.
As for pure awesome. The opening credits for Shaolin Soccer it's EPIC.
I can't think of much past that at the moment. But I'm sure I will later.

#3 Gladiator. The music and I feel I would be remiss not to mention the Germania battle sequence.
#2 Star Trek: First Contact. Just the music.
Still at my #1 Gone With the Wind's opening. Except for the footage of the slaves
it would be perfect. Max Steiner's music should have won an Oscar.

Ghost Ship - The first 10 minutes were so brutal that it ruined the rest of the movie.
The Naked Gun - It's legendary, nuff said.
Transformers - Both the original animated and the live action movies had great openings. A planet eating another planet isn't something you see every day. Peter Cullen's voice has a way of pulling you in and making everything seem epic.

All three of the original Star Wars films. the opening crawl, John William's score, and then each of the opening scenes. Just, wow. The Dark Knight was great to, open right with a bank heist, led by the Joker.
Also the first two X-men films had good openings, with Magneto as a child and Nightcrawler's attack on the White house. That was sweet.
The Departed had a good opening, introducing Nicklson's character as scum right off the bat.

Another good one is _Raising Arizona_. I used to show the opening when I taught the comedy unit of my old film class.
HK, sighing with nostalgia. I used to be cool.

The opening sequence to the new Friday the 13th is a good newer one. I work at a theater and every time the title screen finally comes up the crowd has erupted in applause.

Jasons back story is set up and he hacks through a few campers which climaxes into the opening title and the infamous ch ch ch music. I guess you would have to see it. But its pretty rare that a movie gets the whole applause reaction at every showing.

I have to agree with you on the second part. I thought "Straight Up" would make it more gritty, if you will, but it was a total letdown.
As for favorite opening, there are so many. I just watched "Tango & CAsh" for the 1000000000th time, and the beginning always cracks me up when Stallone stops a TRUCK with a snubnosed .38 True reality-suspension required!

Saw Watchmen today, very good opening credits sequence. A lot of the backstory from the comics was revealed.
