The name is a combonation of gorira (ゴリラ, "gorilla"), and kujira (鯨(クジラ), "whale"), Godzilla was described as "a cross between a gorilla and a whale", One popular story is that "Gojira" was actually the nickname of a rather large, muscular, and hairy stagehand at Toho Studio.
