I found it terribly boring. The game felt like I was just running errands on a ship with a bad bug problem. Nothing scary about it, no tension, just blah.

I'm almost with Evil the Nub on this one. I thought I'd love it, but... eh... It's not as bad as "terribly boring," but I went back to Rock Band 2 pretty quickly. It'd make a better movie.

In a Galaxy Far Far Awry issue 1: Serial Fiction Sideshow now for sale.
Issue 2: Home Sweet Home Invasion also for sale.
Back issue 3: Technophobia coming soon. And you can help!

I think the biggest problem with it was a lack of familiarity. It's easy to imagine yourself in a town or mansion and that helps pull you into it. I can't speak for everyone, but I've never been on a space ship. Without immersion there's no tension, and to me it was just a slow awkward sci-fi shooter.

I don't think that was it for me. I've seen tense moments in unfamiliar settings as long as something made it familiar. For instance, movies like Alien and Event Horizon were tense to me even though they're both on space ships. Maybe there was nothing to bridge the familiarity.
I can't answer for myself what it was. Maybe just too much suspense, not enough action? Parts where I felt all I was doing was walking, even with the scare factor. But I didn't get too deep into the game, so I don't know how it gets later.

Re: Dead Space
I'm playing on hard and I just beat chapter 2.
So far the enemy designs are pretty creepy, definitely makes me want to keep them away from me.
The loading times are abominable. I can get killed in the next room after a save point and it has to load for over a minute just to put me back where I was 30 seconds ago. At least it's not Sonic '06...
At first things seemed pretty desperate and I had to wing certain sectons of chapter one where I didn't have enough ammo to fight my way out, but then I learned to game it.
At some points you can take on enemies one or two at a time, and then run back to get more energy for the time-slowing-thingy, so a lot of enemies can be killed with the melee and stomp. As such I've begun to accumulate a bunch of cutter ammo, and I'm now working on a collection for my new pulse rifle.
Otherwise it's pretty good.

You're right it isn't the unfamiliar location, it's that you don't need to pay attention to it. This suddenly hit me as I was playing Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, I had to be looking for stuff to interact with; desks, shelves, boxes, lockers, and etc. everywhere I went. I had to focus on the environment and that's what drew me into it. With Dead Space everything was so bland and anything you needed to interact with was sparkling like the 4th of July covered in glitter. With this new found knowledge I may give the game a second chance ,if it's cheap enough.
