Mp Optimus Prime's diecast metal parts are the same on either Hasbro or Takara's version. The diecast metal parts being both the chest ,and both legs.

Really don't see how you can be a TF toy collector, yet not owning a MP Prime (unless price is really an issue). I am not a huge TF fan, but this toy draws me into collecting TFs much more seriously a couple years back when it first came out. Still the best TF toy you can have so far. So if budget is an issue, at least get a cheaper version of MP Prime and skip the other MPs. I got the Takara MP-01 first release, and still a very proud owner when co-workers come to my cube and wowed by it. I always tell them, this is as good as TF can get. Look wise, I like this the best. Even MP-04 got some paint issues (check gallery for pics, the MP-04 chest red paint is off and darker than it should). But many of these minor aesthetics difference may not worth the extra mark-up sellers are asking for now. So choose what you can afford.

MP-05 Megatron is awesome, but fragile. If you worry about breakage or want to play with or transform the figure a lot, don't bother with him. I really like mine, and need to strengthed his ankle ball joints for him to stand sturdy with the fusion cannon. But his other joints are very tight and locks good. Once you fix him up, he is very nice. A lot of people complain because they don't usually take the figure apart and reapir minor issues (not that you should, but many times, the big complaints usually turns out to be easy fixes). Though Prime will still be your best ticket to own at least one MP.

I'm waiting eagerly on the repaint of MP Starscream.

That's the 20th anniversary DVD version that's so much poorer. The 20th anniversary one (the one that doesn't say "DVD" in the name) is almost as good as the Takara. Check the photo galleries on this web site and you'll see. The DVD one was the first American run of the toy, I believe. The non-DVD one was a later run that corrected many of the flaws of the first run.

Remember, DVD = crap.

But isn't DVD Edition (that is currently on clearance at Walmart) 100% plastic? I thought this is what they were referring to.

I have the DVD Edition, and it's not 100% plastic. :P

*Disagrees*

The color isnt really an issue until you display it next to another figure with a real, deep red.

Then its just like "Ohhhh i see it now"

-But if you have the money for an MP, get it.
If you dont want to spend that much/dont want to order online, you gotta get what you can find.

I randomly stumbled upon a DVD edition at walmart, and i got it.

No, the 20th Anniversary Optimus Prime was the first American run of the toy. THe Anniversary DVD version is the second. Also the animated movie hasn't been out for 20 years (when the "DVD" Prime came out that is) so it would be a 20th Anniversary. The Anniversary DVD Prime is for the anniversary of the Animated movie not the Transformers line as a whole. The 20th Anniversary Optimus Prime was released on the 20th anniversary of the Transformers line.

The hasbro versions are great if you can find them. They retail for much cheaper than Takara's. Though you have no choice with Megatron. I have Optimus, Megs, and hopefully Starscream as soon as he appears at wallmart, and I have no regrets. they are huge awesome display pieces.

A Masterpiece is a must for any TF collector, even if you only have one. I only have the DVD Prime from Hasbro but I feel fulfilled already. Now if I can raise some money, I'll get a Starscream or a Skywarp.

Read the thread people! :P Hasbro's first version of the toy is nearly identical to the Takara one, except for short smokestacks and 'battle damage' paint! It has the same amount of chrome and diecast. DVD Prime (2nd Hasbro version) still has the diecast, but much less chrome.

Longer smokestacks and no battle damage paint apps would be my guess. That and the Takara boxes are just classy.

that and limited availability worlwide (aside from Japan) and high collector demand and custom duties contribute to the premium we pay for Takara MPs

Between the 2, get Skywarp.

If you've seen the actual toy, it's a no-brainer.

Actually, mine has *no* chrome that I can tell. It's all dull grey plastic. Don't have him with me here at work though, so he might have chromed smokestacks, but the piece that pulls out with the Matrix attached is a dull grey, as are the fuel tanks and just about everything else that's chromed on the Takara or 2004 20th anniversary prime. He's also tomato soup-colored, but it's growing on me.

Yeah, that alternate face is really weird. Did he ever do that in any tv episode?

In the instruction book it kinda sorta shows a clip where his face may have been similar, but I can't remember him ever having that constipated look :P

Very much possible. You'll have to wait till the current generation of Movie toys burns out steam. There's gonna be a period of stagnation. Then they'll breath new life into these toys by doing a special edition or masterpiece edition.

But if the current Movie toys keep on selling like hot cakes, i doubt any masterpiece in the near future.

Yeah, that's what I figured but I wasn't 100% sure (I don't own it, too lazy to look at the gallery) so I wanted to cover my ass by saying 'much less' rather than 'no'.

So there you have it: Hasbro's DVD Edition Prime has no chrome.

I'm not sure the movie characters would benefit much being made into MP. Most of the general release toys are already quite complex and wouldn't work any better in the MP format (Concept Bumblebee is a good example). Perhaps Blackout would be worth doing though.

Unless we are talking G1 movie, as I'd love to see a MP Cyclonus and Galvatron.
