She is playing a human. The few times that Amanda Grayson had screen time in TOS or the Movies, she had a very "Vulcan" demeanor about her with slight bouts of "Human" emotionalism. Ryder is perfect for that.

Captain Pike was horribly disfigured in an accident in 2266 (TOS: "The Menagerie, Part I).
