One thought that crossed my mind, when the transformers entered the earths atmosphere you saw parts breaking off of them. I sort of assumed that had some kind of ablative heat shielding. Ablative shielding is an actual alternative to heat resistant materials when it comes to atmospheric re-entry.

As for replies to a couple other posts.

I asked a physics nut friend about not freezing in space but being controlled by ice. He says that this has to deal with a difference between ratdiative cooling which is slow and convective cooling which is fast. Not sure how accurate that is or if he was defending a post.

As for someone complaining on scientific innacuracy in sci fi. that usually doesn't bother me unless it is glaringly obvious and the sci-fi is trying to seem realistic. This movie was fantastical enough for me not to notice any. And though a bit off topic, to me the WORST kind of scientific innacuracy in Sci-fi is when sci-fi gets the physics right but flubs the biology. Because then many people claim it is scientificly accurate anyways as they never look beyond the physics.

Sabot rounds have very little to do with heat actually. The only heat effect a sabot round would have is the residual heat from the initial cartridge explosion and then the air friction after the sabot shell falls off that the projectile would pick up. Sabot rounds do not turn into liquid metal due to extreme heat. Sabot rounds are literally flying darts comprised of the most dense materials we can find such as depleted uranium.

Again, only HEAT/HEAP rounds have anything to do with liquid metals. For more information on standard 120mm HEAT rounds go here.

As for sabot or HEAT/HEAP rounds coming out of a man portable grenade launcher, well, munitions technology just isn't there yet. Nor has any munitions company designed a HEAT/HEAP round that uses a sabot type design for higher muzzle velocity. As for the grenade launcher weapon system itself, well, the technology is already there. Behold the M-32 MGL.
