So we've had a man on the moon and have been making "We can send a man to the moon but we can't..." jokes for forty years now. What does everyone think of this now? I know a lot of people back in 69 didn't think it had happened, and still a lot of people don't believe today. I wasn't alive back when it happened, so I don't really know the social or political climate, but I do know I would have been excited to see it happen.
Also, looking into the future, how about the plans to soon send someone to Mars? What about colonizing the moon?

Moon landing, shmoon landing. Obviously it was faked.
No, sorry, I'm not that stupid. It really did happen. HEard on the news this morning that there was a survey in London where something like 40% of people surveyed thought that Buzz Lightyear was a real live astronaut.
Now is not the time economically, but I thnk that we should get back into the space race/exploration venue. As for Mars, a rocket base on the moon would better the chances in terms of fuel expenditure and so forth.

NASA wants to start the next moon mission 2019 or 2020 ish and start constructing a moonbase from where Mars missions would be started. Also that base will allow us the mine the moon for it's resources.

Well, I think the whole feat was amazing, from start to finish. Jack Kennedy in 1961 said there would be a man on the Moon by the decade's end, and sure enough, with 5 months to spare, Neil Armstrong was skipping and hopping.
But seriously, I think it is the most amazing feat of the 20th century, edging out the development of the atom bomb only because the moon landing was such a positive thing. Yeah, there are people who say it's fake. I choose to believe it is real, and salute the spirit of the people involved, from the lowliest clerk at NASA to Commanders Armstrong and Aldrin themselves. A giant leap indeed.

There isn't fire hot enough to burn those people properly.

For your trivia collections: apparently the lunar rovers were all built out here in beautiful Bethpage, Long Island. They built thirteen; only three exist today.
I say, yay to Mars. Actually, I'd be pretty okay with anything that got kids wanting to do something with their lives other than 'make money'. I remember how we all used to actually study math and science and stuff, and everyone secretly wanted to be an astronaut.
Now: I had a student the other day who resisted learning how to calculate GPA because he figured if he ever did anything that *mattered* about math (meaning, not GPA), he'd have an accountant in his retinue.
HK, depressed because I start teaching soon.

I'm disappointed that we last set foot on the moon five years before I was born and haven't been back since. We're never going to find the Monolith at this rate. We may already be too late:
