I remember fried chicken gizzards being tasty... haven't had them in a long time.
As for restaurants I wish I had near me but don't. White Castle, Denny's and the Cheesecake Factory come to mind.

Speaking of naansense, the Mrs made some mighty fine saag "paneer" - quoted because it's full vegan

And yes, I know it looks gross to the uninitiated. We replaced the paneer with tofu and this being our second run we did something a little different with the tofu. And for those who don't know, tofu is a mother **** to get to taste like anything, more less good.
So I did a hot water brine on it. Boiled very salty water, turned off the heat and dumped the tofu in for 15 minutes, then let it drain for 15 minutes. Has a nice salty taste with a creamy texture. Plays very nice with the sauce and hopefully will soak up all that flavor while it sits overnight.
Oh and I had a couple local dark stouts. One was a pretty straight forward milk stout and the other was a peanut butter milk stout. Both are brewed in Louisiana, so I won't bother a name drop.

I ate a 18oz medium rare Prime Rib tonight. With it came a baked potato, and a huge pile of brussels sprouts.
Wife, who is amazingly talented in the kitchen as well as kind enough to let me see her naked (and suffer through seeing me naked), cooked it to perfection. She is a good nurse, but I think she may have missed her calling as a pro chef.

Both are good if not better than average but the PB stout is interesting. It's just a waff of PB at the end. I'm a big fan of Gnarley Barly Brewing, they make an outstanding IPA called Juicifer.
Craft beers have just blown up lately and I've been making the crawl. So have the sour beers shown up in your area yet?

Sours have made their way here, but they haven’t exploded. Several other beer beer aficionados I know have said that their gonna be bigger than IPAs, but I don’t really see that happening, at least not here in Michigan. A lot of people lose their minds for IPAs here, I’m sure you’ve heard of Bell’s Two Hearted Ale.
Personally I prefer Stouts and Porters; Atwater Brewing in Detroit has their Raspberry Vanilla Java Porter which is on of my favorites.
That Flying Tiger, can you find that outside of Louisiana? I’ll be visiting my brother in the Florida Panhandle in May and I’ll try to find it if I can.

I had my first sour weiss at a brewery in Natchez, MS - it was blackberry or something. I felt that they'd be the next IPA and now I'm seeing them everywhere. They are quite good on a very hot summer day.Nemesis Maximo wrote:carytheone wrote:Nemesis Maximo wrote:carytheone wrote:Oh and I had a couple local dark stouts. Being a low budget wine snob, my preference in beer depends on the day, temperature and meal. This winter I'm sticking to stouts and porters. The best two I've had recently was Founders Canadian Breakfast Stout and Grimm's Icing on the Cake. Both ABV above 10%.
I'm not sure of those brewer's reach, I've only just heard of Flying Tiger (North LA) and have been drinking Gnarly Barly (South LA and about 45 minutes from me) for years. Baton Rouge is about to get its 3rd brewery soon, which will be about two blocks from my house.
Can't say I've heard of either of those breweries, but I'd never call myself an aficionado. Mostly I see local and beers from nearby states or larger craft beers that have a stronger reach. I work in grocery stores and talk to the beer/alcohol venders from time to time, they are the ones that dictate a majority of what you see.
What part of the panhandle? Where we normally visit got hit hard recently by a hurricane. You're more likely to see Southern Mississippi beers there than Louisiana, keep an eye out for anything from Lazy Magnolia Brewery. MS has quite a few breweries now. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with anything from Alabama or Florida, just too far away. You might find something by the big LA brewers; Abita Brewing or NOLA Brewing.

Ironhidensh, to each his own, but I've seen someone eat a medium rare steak in front of me, and I couldn't see myself doing that. I like my cow good and dead. Not crispy, but browner than rare.

Tofu is one of those things that is hard to make taste. It's even harder to make it taste good. We've gotten pretty good at it. About 4 years ago we were almost fully vegetarian and getting close to vegan and I had lost around 80 pounds (a lot of which was muscle). Life changes and I'm back up about 40 (a lot of which isn't muscle). Did you know there's a sandwich in every beer?Rodimus Prime wrote:That escalated quickly...Nemesis Maximo wrote:Burn wrote:carytheone wrote:vegan

Ah steak! Medium rare yes, but not bloody. I'm a NY strip or ribeye kinda guy. I cook them two ways; either on a charcoal grill, very hot and very fast or in a cast iron skillet, on the stove and also very hot very fast. Both are excellent in their own ways. Typically topped with blue cheese and paired with a cabernet sauvignon (or some other robust red). On the side is usually something bright green and contrasting like asparagus or brussel sprouts then something complimentary like some form of potato (can't really go wrong with steak and potatoes).

Now that I feel alive again, we had the family over for NYE and played an escape room board game. We had snacks and booze, mostly booze. It was fun.
Anyway, this seemed like a better place for this convo...
Yeah, we have a place called The Londoner Grill here. They have a beater red double-decker bus out front. We at brunch there once, it was bland and according to that stalker-ass google via maps, it was 4 years ago.

Yes, Google Maps can be very creepy. It remembers my cross country trip from 2 1/2 years ago.
Like, every place I went. It was a 6000-mile trip, I went all over the place. And here is Google Maps, asking me if I want to go again. The thing is, I do.

Wow, that's a lot of flavor. Going need a few minutes to process. Based out of Holland Michigan. I've been wanting to try this for a while, but it's one of those pricey 4 packs.

I fancy myself a whisky drinker and it's definitely on that spectrum of flavor. It's nothing like a coffee/chocolate stout, it's real clean. It's also not like traditional stouts like Guinness. Sweet on the nose like molasses, carmelly in the mouth with hints of vanilla. Leaves the tongue feeling dry. At 11% ABV, it's a sipper. I like it, but wouldn't want it all the time. Worthy of a pick up if you like high alcohol dark beers.D-Maximal_Primal wrote:carytheone wrote:
