Who are Big Concoy & Lio Convoy?
I was looking at the database descriptions of Big Convoy and Lio Convoy and I remain a little confused. Can someone please give me a breakdown of who these two characters are? Are they different versions of the same 'bot? I've tried to do my research into the Japanese Beast Wars series and I remain a little unsure of it all.
Along these lines of discussion, is it supposed to be the standard procedure to name anyone of command level some form of "Prime" or "Convoy" on Cybertron during the Beast Wars era? And, is it also supposed to be standard to give them an "Optimus Prime"-themed head. Is there puspose in any of this?
Thanks in advance for any explanation...

Re: Who are Big Concoy & Lio Convoy?
In the Japanese Beast Wars series there is a council of Convoy. These all resemble "G1" Convoy aka Optimus Prime in some way, especially facially. For the Cybertron party of Beast Wars II Lio Convoy (the lion) was given command. For Beast Wars Neo another Convoy was set out to be the hero of the Cybertrons. That was the wolly mammoth Big Convoy. These were totally different characters. Where Lio Convoy was the honorable just leader, Big Convoy basically has a screw lose and would jump into action with blasters fireing. So while they do look somewhat like each other, they are definately not the same person.Novacron wrote:I was looking at the database descriptions of Big Convoy and Lio Convoy and I remain a little confused. Yeah, basically Big Convoy and Lio Convoy are two Maximals who, like Optimus Primal, are commanders and have faces looking a lot like Optimus Prime - probably a popular thing among the Maximal commanders to look like their great leader of the past.
Of course the real reason they look like that is to sell toys. Anything named "Convoy" with an Optimus-like face sells in Japan.

Great! All those explanations make sense (especially the "selling Convoy toys" bit). I had heard that the new Beast Wars comic series will have one or more of the Convoys in it and I really wanted to have some kind of grasp on their characters before I read about them there. So, thanks a ton!

Yeah, except they're not likely to be portrayed as they were in the cartoon. We already saw Lio Convoy in "The Gathering", and Furman has confirmed that Big Convoy will be in "The Ascending", but neither of them will necessarily be portrayed as they were in their respective series...at least, I don't think so.
And personally, I think Furman should have called Lio Convoy Leo Prime. I mean, the Classics figure paved the way.

You have to remember that IDW is throwing out much if not all of the past uses of these characters, so they may be used, and thought of differently.
The Beast Wars Files to be released soon, will give us needed background information on these characters, their histories, and subsequently, the history of the 'BW' universe, in pieces of characters' experiences and backgrounds--that's if the previous versions of this type of book are to be believed--.

That's part of the problem I have with this series. While I'm going to enjoy it (let's get that out of the way first so that this doesn't come off as a criticism), the fact that they're going to be inventing new histories for these characters despite the fact that they have history, regardless of how well known it is, makes it seems just as fan fictiony as the G1 MTMTE series did. (It's not exactly helped by the fact that, by including the BW II and Neo characters, you're not only including a bunch of repaints like the Armada MTMTE did, but also throwing a rather large bone to the hardcore fans, who are most likely going to be the only people who know who these guys are.)

I totally see where you're coming from, especially in light of MTMTE. However, I'm in favor of IDW's new histories, as they've done such a great job so far of creating a new storyline and direction for the characters. Also, I never saw the Japanese BW cartoons, so any development on these characters will be novel to me. I do agree with Darth that they should be called "Prime" though.

Are the histories in IDW's story contradicting the estrablished ones that much? I bet someone could fanwank them all together.
ALso, Big Convoy did make one brief cameo in The Gathering, on a flashback to Cybertron where he was talking to Heinlad and Magmatron.

If anyone can, it's Furman. He'll certainly try, of course. Whether or not he succeeds...well, ask me again in December.

Is Vector Prime a Matrix Bearer then too? Nope. Or Modus Prime, the Mini-Con? Nope.
If someone wants to give themselves a name, who can stop them. I could legally change my name to Washington. It wouldn't make me a President.

That's cause your first name's not George, and it's not your picture on the $1 bill...

Oh, we're not talking about that George.

OK, then. Forget about it and move along.

well smart alec
vector primus is written as one of the first transformers so maybe he's a part of the matrix creation so that is his link to matrix.
as for the mini con well he's a part of the 3rd race of cybertron and maybe he was the first of his kind or he's some dirty name sake wanting glory
hmm let me think
Nova Prime = Matrix
Sentiel Prime = Matrix
Optimus Prime = Matrix (Orion Pax/Optronix)
Rodimus Prime = Matrix (formerly HotRod)
Primal Prime = Possible matrix holder
Nememsis Prime = Dark Matrix
each are all true cybertronian leaders
oh know is it more than coincidence

Can someone pretend I know nothing about any BW series and explain how the new histories of the BW characters differ from their original ones?

The characters in Beast Wars Second and Beast Wars neo are new Maximals and Predacons on different missions on different planets than our Beast Wars guys.
