Alternator Bludgeon - need some advice on yellow/gold paint

Postby clay » Fri Nov 24, 2006 3:19 pm

Hi, people!

I started work on an Alternator version of Bludgeon a couple of days ago after I realized that the Meister head, without the horns, looks a whole lot like the head of Bludgeon's inner robot. I used this frame from the War Within comic as a reference.

I thought it would be neat to paint the car parts as the 'shell' and use the 'inner robot' color scheme for the actual robot parts. I had to alter the color scheme a bit by reversing the reds and greens since a yellow body with green limbs would look rather ugly.

I picked out a brown paint that I had hoped would look closer to gold when dry than it did, but not a big deal since it will make a good primer.

Here's the progress so far:

Robot mode

Car mode

Problem, though. The yellow and gold paints I have suck. They apply and dry in a very splotchy manner.

Can anyone recommend a specific yellow or gold paint that applies well? Model Master preferrably, since that's the biggest brand selection at Hobby Lobby. Only kink about going back to Hobby Lobby and picking up more paint is that it's a 45 minute drive away.

No matter what, Bludgeon's going to be brown for a little while, but he'll survive...

Don't know if you have them over there but the Humbrol Range has a nice range of metallic colours including Bronze Gold and copper.

Well, after a bit more research, it seems that Bludgeon, the toy, is orange. Bludgeon, the comic book character, is sometimes orange, sometimes yellow. But, the orange paint I have is great, so... my Bludgeon will be orange, too! :D

It's just regular Testor's acrylic orange paint.

Some colors in their basic brand are really quite nice - orange, black, teal, blue, and purple all apply evenly and thickly. It's the yellow and gold that aren't as good.

With most Yellow paints, you need to apply a white base coat first because yellow paints aren’t usually very opaque.
