since I collect just about any fiugres I can get, I have often purchased figures or toys that I know little to nothing about them.
for example, I bought two UFC figures from the local doller store. now i'm no fan of UFC, but I thought the figures were kind of cool, so I bought them. mainly beucase they are quite different then all my GI joe soldiers and Marvel/DC superheroes. I get sick of buying the same things, I don't mean I buy alot of the same spiderman, but I do buy alot of soldiers, superheros, and robots of course. I also have wanted some form of wrestling or fighting figures. but anyway, so my question is...
how often do you buy fiugres that you know nothing about?
or... do you like to collect a greater varity of figures? instead of just one brand/product line/ etc.
do you/how often/would you/ buy a figure or other toy that you know nothing about...

I find it's not wise for me to diversify too much.
Especially HobbyLink Japan has been known to tempt me too much with their Japanese figures: I've already bought several Yamato Macross figures without actually really being interested in Macross as a series.

I'm so meta, even this acronym...

Few figures are ever buy on sight for me these days due to the awareness from the internet. For TFs its impossible because of the awareness from this site, Halo figures are generally all the same, Lego is straight forward, and Gundams, the tech can change but its generally the same thing too. If a toy surprises me it's more of beating expectations, rather than surprising a lack of expertise with a figure.

I bought this Secret Saturdays badguy figure just because he'd make a good addition to my The Batman collection.

I don't like to do a lot of "knee-jerk" buying, since time and experience have taught me that quality is really hit or miss.
Normally I will read a few reviews from a popular forum of that particular toy (I am into collecting TMNT and Robotech figures as well), and try to see if I can find a youtube video review.
I like being able to have my childhood nostalgia back, and hate those times when it got ruined when I was expecting an "updated" version of some of my old 80's toys...but what I actually end up getting is cheaply made, no articulation, etc.

I can't think of the last time I walked into a shop, saw something I didn't know about before, and walked out with it. I sort of miss that, but then there's a lot of crap floating about on the shelves (which is nothing new, of course) and I prefer to spend my cash on something that interests me. I try to focus my spending. TFs are my main collection, and I can't afford all of those I want!
assembling a Neo-G1/TF:TM cast. Please PM if you have (or know of) the following at a reasonable price: Classics or Henkei Astrotrain, Sunstreaker, Sideswipe, or 3rd Party iGear Ratchet and Ironhide.
Also looking for Universe Repugnus and Overbite, Frostbite and Longhorn and any Webdiver toys.

I do that never. I don't have enough money to buy all the Transformers I want. Then I have other childhood toys I would like to get/replace. I just don't have the money to get stuff I know nothing about. I also have no interest in that.

This guy. I had heard nothing about him prior to seeing his preorder last month. I ashamed to admit that isn't the first time I've impulse spent 300+ dollars

However, having him in-hand I can say this Omega Supreme is worth every penny to me.

Wow. That is really brave, with it being a newcomer on the Third Party scene and the size of it and all. I'm seriously impressed.
I think the last time I got a figure that just happened to be in the shop, without me even knowing it was going to be there or of its existence, was Alternators Optimus Prime and Decepticharge.
It's what almost got me back into collecting, too!

How often do I buy figures or toys I know nothing about? More frequently than I'd like.
Many of the stuff I bought, I have no knowledge of its origins or history. I got three Border Break model kits just because I like the designs, and knew nothing of their origins. Same thing with the Jehuty model kit. As far ass Figmas, its almost always the case..."Ooh, nice fig! OMG I MUST HAVE IT!!!!"
