Why not? the original G1 Ultra Magnus was nothing more than a white Optimus Prime with a trailer that became battle armor. The truck cab/actual robot was the same exact mold. Now, me, I do plan on making a trailer that becomes battle armor for this mold. However, it definately lives up the the G1 Magnus as he looks without his armor.

Welcome to the club, Greyrider. Magnus was the one of only two movie TFs I got when they came out (the other being Galvatron). I still have both of them, though Magnus has seen better days. The simple truth isa that Magnus iis a white Prime with a trailer that becomes battle armor. Thus, it makes perfect sense that the Classics line would release Magnus as a white repaint of Prime because that is exactly what he is supposed to be.

so when they brought it over to the states they just changed the packaging (like alot of the other TF's which is why many of them came with drivers in the first run). so as far as the American UM is concerned there is only the combined mode as opposed to the Japanese version which was just another robot in an army of diaclone UM's. (yes before the US gave them backgrounds there was a fleet of UM's!)

Actually, none of the American TFs came with drivers, unless you can prove otherwise. I was almost 14 when Transformers came out and had quite a few. I remember quite well what they came with. The only ones with drivers were the Headmasters, and thse didn?t come out until ?88. While the cartoon only showed the combined mode, that does not mean that Ultra Magnus was not identical to Prime underneath. The first time we ever see Magnus outside of his armor in any story was in the Dreamwave comics after his armor is destroyed. The armor does help to differentiate him from Prime, but the armor is still just that? armor. He simply prefers to keep it on when in robot mode. Regardless of whether there were a fleet of UMs in the Diaclone series, that does not chage the fact that Ultra Magnus?the Transformer, not the Diaclone?is a white Prime with a trailer that becomes battle armor. That was obviously Hasbro?s intent even if Marvel didn?t run with it like they could have. Otherwise, given that Hasbro had Takara had already been coming up with new designs specifically for the TF line, they would have given him a completely new design totally unrelated to Diaclone. Sure, they could save money by using old Diaclone molds, but that can?t be the only reason. Remember, while the white cab/robot came from the Diaclone line, so too did the trailer. Why do you think Dreamwave, Hasbro and Takara have all been showing Magnus without his armor? Because, that is what Ultra Magnus really looks like under his armor. We just hardly ever get to see it.

Whatever.
Anyways this is my last post on this. The very first shipment of wave 1 from G1 was a direct repack of the japanese toys with new stickers and booklets. My first TF's were Prime and Ironhide. Op's came with 1 yellow and 1 red diaclone driver and Ironhide came with a green one. when the next shipment arrived they had reworked the foam so as not to include the men!

Oh, I agree, that it would be more fun if he had his trailer and could be suited up in his armor, which is why I intend to build a trailer/armor for him. However, by the same token I am also glad that he is still the true White Prime mold he always was, as befits the G1 Homage this line is meant to be. If he weren?t, then he wouldn?t be a true ?Classics? Ultra Magnus. Because that is the one thing that distinguishes the original Ultra Magnus from the RID or Energon versions of Ultra Magnus. The G1 UM was a White Prime with a trailer that became a suit of armor, while the other two were completely different bots entirely than Prime. RID UM was a single unit Car carrier, while the Energon UM was a repaint of Armada Overload.
