I don't get the hatred for newer continuities

I know it's probably a vocal minority and yes, I understand the importance of childhood nostalgia. I mean, I probably find Beast Wars way too good than what it probably is when put to the standards of modern Transformers series but still. I...I don't get it. I don't get the cries of whiny 40 years old who constantly rage that everything new is utter sh** without any redeeming quality and that everything that isn't the G1 cartoon is an abomination that should be tossed into Unicron's gullet.
I just don't get it. Childhood nostalgia is one thing but utter blind hatred and denial is utterly ridiculous. There's a difference between 'I don't like it and it's my opinion' and 'YOU'RE WRONG! IT'S POOP! IT'S DOO DOO AND YOU SHOULD FEEL BAD FOR LIKING IT! IT'S NOT THE *REAL* TRANSFORMERS!'. Please, people, enlightment; am I missing something? Like I said, I understand the value of nostalgia and I am aware not everything in the franchise has been a masterpiece but not this blind insanity that an '80 children cartoon was the high point of a franchise (and thus that anything after is forever automatically bad) that continued relatively strong 30 years after said cartoon.

A second part is that the movies represent, to a degree, what Transformers as a pop-culture phenomenon can be when it's given a nine-figure budget to play with. Theoretically, that much money should be able to result in the absolute best of what Transformers as a franchise has to offer. Instead, it's been put towards making some quite frankly rather awful movies. There's a sense of disappointment in the fandom about that, a kind of nostalgia for what could have been.
Still, it's not all doom and gloom. The Prime/BH continuity isn't doing too badly, and Generations is being largely well-received. Not to mention the video games are doing fairly well, and the comics are considered good quality. And in time, the movies will run out of steam and stop being made, or at least stop being written by whoever's doing them now.

So others may hate new things? So what. Transformers is a massive fandom, people will like and hate different things about the franchise but we all love the premise: giant shape-changing-physics-defying sentitent robots from Cybertron who wage war on each other.

I'm not sure why people get in such a rage over different continuities. If nothing else, the Transformer multiverses allow people with different tastes to enjoy the product.

I could give points as to why the Bay movies are bad, but unless you are willing to be open-minded (you know, that same open-mindedness that people say G1'ers should have for the newer stuff? Yeah, same thing.), then it all usually goes down the same toilet. I really like open debate about these topics, by they are so easy to derail that it's usually pointless to even bring up.
So, I'll just say it like this: the Bay movies could have been great. But they were far, far from it in almost every respect.

The sad fact is the new stuff can't compare with a hastily made, 30 year old cartoon. There is better acting on the G1 cartoons than 100 million plus productions like Bayformers!JetOptimus23 wrote:1984forever wrote:Season 1 of the G1 cartoon is the definitive Transformers. Not all KOntinuities are bad, WFC/FOC/RoftDS are awesome. KOntinuities that are unwatchable, unreadable and embarrassing deserve the fandom's hatred.

Yeah but Rise of the Dark Spark is half bayformers, so wouldn't that mean it's half "unwatchable"? Plus it's kind of unfair to G1 to compare it to Bay's movies, which have budgets within the billions and thousands upon thousands of people working on them to a 1980s cartoon with a low budget and a focus on selling toys instead of storytelling and characterization...though the series actually does some of that better than Bay's films so...

So yeah. As far as I'm concerned, the new continuities are a welcome addition to the Transformers multiverse.

NOT a huge fan of G1 NOW (was is 1984)
Now a huge fan of the new stuff.
I think it's more that the vocal minority is the loudest. We used to have a saying when I worked in a call center... You only here from about 10% of your customers, and they are upset. 90% of your customers are happy.

is it actually possible to rip something off from something you already own/created?1984forever wrote:I tried to watch some of the newer shows since so much of it is ripped off from G1, but most of the stuff is unwatchable.
anyways... i find more often is the opposite: people tossing aside G1 in favor of the new stuff. ill watch anything and everything at least once. what ive found to be my favorites are:
-G1 season 1. grew up with it and will always love it, campy 80's commercial nonsense and all.
-BW and BM. probably because its directly tied to G1, but also so skillfuly done.
everything else, i have likes and dislikes, but try to keep an open mind and include everything.
