autobots get axes, wrecking balls, nunchuks, throwing stars, sheilds, laces... and zap zappers & magnets?

Weapon: Mighty Ear

I'm assuming you're referring specifically to Transformers Animated (or Beast Machines but less so).

It was an intended choice to better convey the Autobot's role as peaceful robots and make the Decepticons look better suited for war and have them appear a more formidable antagonist.
