Are weapons really accessories?
- Motto: "Individual freedom above all else."
When I think if "accessories" to a figure, I don't always count weapons. To me, an "accessory" it's something that enhances that specific figure and doesn't go with any other figure. I know some weapons do this, either in the media for which the toy is made, or just the toy itself. I also realize weapons can be interchanged. But I do make a distinction between weapons and accessories, even if the 2 aren't always mutually exclusive. Do you consider weapons accessories? Somehow, to me, calling a weapon, any weapon, an "accessory" kinda takes away from its importance.

I'll use G1 Optimus Prime as my example of how I define it.
Yes, the fists and rifle are 'accessories' to the main form, but without the fists - he isn't a complete robot (therefore a Necessity) and the rifle is just part of what you expect the robot to have.
If I buy a doll - I expect it to have clothes. If I buy a Transformer - I expect it to have a weapon. In both cases - I don't expect them to have a briefcase or fishing rod.
Before anyone asks - is it disappointing when a toy doesn't have a gun? Yes, and I was even disappointed as a child when Minibots had no weapons.
- Cab - Toy
Fists - Necessity
Rifle - Weapon
Trailer - Accessory
Hose - Accessory
Missiles - Accessory
Roller - Accessory

I never counted a weapon as an 'accessory' either. It's actually kind of odd to think of them that way.
Not caring about scale since 1984. Just like Hasbro.

When a figure that does not come with a weapon, then I give it an accessory to hold.
(Many TF included. And I have a Batman that doesn't come with a batarang.
)
When a figure that comes with a I don't know what it is, then it is called an accessory.
(What is CW Dead End's thingy? I don't need an exhaust pipe.)

You need to play more late 80's early 90's beat 'em up video games if you can't see that a big pipe is a perfectly cromulant weapon.

Oh I remembered that really well. On top of my head is that Capcom's dinosaur game. "Grab that pipe, hit him, hit him!"; "Grab that bucket, throw at him!"; "Grab that rock...."

Of course they're accessories.
Everyone needs to accessorize with weaponry. Why with the right blade or pistol, an entire range of wardrobe and fashion options come together.

Honestly it depends on the weapon. There are some detachable weapons that would completely ruin the figure if they were lost (See: DOTM Shockwave's Mechtech weapon, pretty much any RID 2001 original mold, etc). Then there's some figures that are better off without their handheld weapons, such as the Cybertron Defence Scattorshot mold.
Of course, really, the more 5mm weapons in my collection the better. My growing cadre of Swindles needs more wares to sell!
(Speaking of Swindles, is the Animated figure any good? He looks awesome but I have heard he is a tad floppy...)

Personally, I consider anything that is a necessary component of the robot or vehicle mode (like G1 detachable fists or Classics Mirage's front spoiler/gun) to be a "part," and anything beyond that is an accessory. Ultra Magnus can still be Ultra Magnus without his gun, but if he's missing his hands he looks pretty sad.
