Armistice Day

A little surprised/disappointed that there hasn't already been a thread marking the 90tn anniversary of the signing of the armistice. Especially in light of the current political climate.

Lest we forget.

Out of curiosity, do Americans/Canadians wear poppies at this time of year?

One of the most poignant and funny scenes in television history, dedicated to the ridiculous nature of war. If Americans aren't familiar with Blackadder, I would thoroughly recommend that you educate yourself on the series.

Ah, so Americans don't wear poppies. Curious. Do you just hold ceremonies? Is there a two minute silence on the eleventh hour?

Nope. Nothing. Not even a JC Penny sale. We tend to forget our history, like that part about...uh...that guy? I think he had hair? Hm, I'll remember later, maybe.

That is surprising when one considers the patriotism that Americans seem to be brought up to have.

WWI isn't as well remembered as WWII. I guess everything that happened and came about because of WWII just seems to overshadow what happened and came about in WWI. (Even though the Nazi party came about WWI)

It isn't just for WW1 though. A poppy is worn, and a two minute silence is held, for every serviceman and woman who has died for Britain in every war since 1918.

euhrmm... i'm not American i'm Belgian.
November 11the is a national holiday here, and yess we do hold ceremonies celebrating the end of WWI, especialy in the area where the actual fighting took place
Sure you've heard of 'flanders fields' , with is actualy the most western part of the country.

We also have a tradition here to play the Last Post at a town called Ieper every day in memorial of the ones who died for our freedom.

Never heard of the tradition to where a poppie though  , with is pretty strange when you think of it because the association between WWI and poppies i believe comes from....... flanders fields  , where the grow in an abundance #-o

Education for the Lazy Americans. I think I'm aloud to say that, as if one cannot insult their own who can they insult?

WWII definitely overshadows the events of WWI, and Veterans day is an equivalent. However in recent times my impression is that veterans day goes equally far to honor the current and former service men and women who still live and not just the deceased.
