Mike Patton is a god! That guy can seriously do anything with any of his 12,000 bands and I'll buy it. I love Mr. Bungle and Sleepy Time Gorilla Museum.

If anybody else here is a fan of Ska or PunkSka, here are a few bands to check out:

The Planet Smashers
The Aquabats
Kemuri
Mustard Plug
Gangster Fun
The Suicide Machines (Skip the self-titled one, though. It's crap on a stick.)
The Harbinger of Jell-O Puddin' Pops!

For INSANE guitar work you MUST listen to the Marty Friedman/Jason Becker duo in Cacophony. The singing isn't great, but on tracks like "Concerto" and the "Ninja" solo DEFINATELY makes up for it. They only have two albums due to Becker's ALS, I personally like the first one the best...

I've recently been into the Aussie band Wolfmother as well... seeing them live was amazing.

Onmyouza- An awesome Japanese metal band.

Emery- An awesome alternative/screamo group with lyrics that MAKE SENSE.

MOVE- Another Japanese group that fuses Electronica and Metal to create an awesome sound.

The rest are too obscure for most of you to know or care (Lots of Japanese music).

I thought I met Marty Friedman once. Only after rabidly approaching him roaring "holy ****, Marty Friedman! Sign my willy!" did I realise it wasn't him.

WHAT? Where is the love for symphonic metal?

Moving with the most well-known to the least:

Cradle of Filth--been around for over a decade, but an absolutely amazing band. Most of their videos are borderline pornography/splatterpunk, though, so I won't post a link to a video. However, here is an audio link to their greatest and my favorite song, "Coffin Fodder."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqeu5aV3xjU

Children of Bodom--Norwegian metal. Check out "In Your Face". Warning: they say the "f" word. A lot.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLAjKtmT3lk

Amon Amarth--guys who sing about Vikings. Here's Runes to My Memory. Synchronized headbanging FTW.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFq2YJKYa-k

Chthonic--be prepared to be smacked in the face by the most evil song you will ever hear: Indigenous Laceration.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71WycugwlW4

Hell yeah.

saviour machine - a friend turned me on to these guys recently. they're a christian band, but don't let that scare you off; their lyrics are in no way preachy, and unlike the vast majority of christian bands they're actually good. their "legend" series, which goes through the story of the apocalypse as described in the book of revelations and is all i'm currently familiar with, is prog metal with goth and symphonic influences.

remnant 11 - my friends' band. think messianic jewish (jews who believe that jesus is the jewish messiah) matisyahu with more rock influence and less rap. i should mention that the one song currently up for download on their main site is a demo, and the final version no longer has that irritatingly simplistic keyboard piece running through it. oh, and a note of interest: the bassist can play quite well on just about any instrument (and if you hand him an instrument he's never tried before, chances are he'll be able to teach himself to play it proficiently within a week), and they've discussed the possibility of doing a show where he starts off playing the drums, then goes to each other instrument (with the regular player for each taking over when he finishes) until the whole band is on stage.

weird. these are pretty much the only christian/messianic bands i listen to (i may hold similar if not the same beliefs, but let's face it, most christian bands just plain suck), and they're the ones i end up listing. go figure.
