So on one side of the debate we have "kibble-formers" and on the other we have "parts-formers".
As for me- not only am I in favor of a transformer not having to remove any parts to transform, I'm the sort of collector who has to pose action figures with as many of their accessories as possible on them or with them. You should have seen my MGS Solid Snake figure back before I lost most of his stuff! He was ready for ANYTHING!
Then on the other hand you have Devastator, who lives and loves only by the grace of his magically vanishing connector bits, so I'll concede that you may have a point. This time...
But I do think that those treads look cool on!

Old School combiners are different beasts from other TFs. Those guys needed those connector pieces to make the merged forms possible, particularly for the engineering of the times (1980's). You can see combiners nowadays have connectors incoporated into bodies and limbs. With the engineering nowadays, Takara tries to have little to no detaching pieces except weapons (and even weapons can be plugged in to both modes nowadays). The best is to design a transformer that would keep all pieces intact during transformation but have the least number of kibble showing as possible in bot mode. But if that's not possible, the next best if kibble formers. With the engineering nowdays, it's not acceptable to have to remove parts (weapons and similiar accessories aside). As a customizer though, without the engineering team of Takara, it can be hard sometimes to avoid partsformers.

Personally, I would ahve kept the treads on the struts and make use of the hinges on the upper arms so they swing onto the back of his arms, for that extra G1 feel.

Very clever making a few small changes to an existing mold to end up with an entirely different alternate mode. Let's just hope the real Classics Galvatron is this good. ^_~
