DJDrew&ScoobyDoo, the reference was from Futurama when Fry went back to the 40's and did his grandmother.

I believe the US government created an aircraft that looked similar to Cosmos in the 50's or 60's. It was meant to take off without a runway. They discontinued it because it was impractical. There are plenty of pictures of it on the internet but Im too lazy to go find a link to it.
