Okay here is something to make you think a bit.
The cartoon versions of the insecticons basically got ejected in an escape pod prior to the nemesis crashing circa 4,000,000 years ago. They scanned insects and evolved over this time to consume any food into energon, something we do not ever see any other transformers able to do.
We also see that the insecticons are reformatted into Cyclonus, Scourge/Sweeps during the movie and these are accepted as the most powerful transformers, mainly because they have been upgraded by Unicron.....
HOWEVER
In Beast Wars, we see the ability to consume food is a part of transformers evolution as well as the ability to shield from energon using bio-tech in beast mode. Waspinator was also possessed or similar by Shrapnel in an episode, he had the ability to control his clones as well.
We never see it but the insecticons were basically around during the same time the Maximals and Predacons were on earth reading all the information we have although never explicitly stated the two groups were aware of one another.
What if their evolution only came about as a result of interaction/stealing/scanning their future selves such as Waspinator and any perceived powers that Cyclonus and Scourge have from Unicron is nothing to do with that, but just the fact they had around 4 millions years of evolution on earth as well as stealing technology from the Maximals and Predacons well ahead of their time.

Wasn't Skywarp turned into Cyclonus (or his Armada) though?

Waspi was Malfunctioning
It’s certainly possible, but we were never given a date as to when the insecticons cane back on lineWe never see it but the insecticons were basically around during the same time the Maximals and Predacons were on earth reading all the information we have although never explicitly stated the two groups were aware of one another.

Bombshell became Cyclonus, Even though it’s the hotly debated the solid evidence is pretty clear
