There is a funny British propaganda caricature of him made up as a pirate. The Dutch also had to recognize his standard so he wouldn't be accused of piracy when he sailed the Serapis into port, he transferred to her after the Bonhomme Richard sank.

The name is a combonation of gorira (ゴリラ, "gorilla"), and kujira (鯨(クジラ), "whale"), Godzilla was described as "a cross between a gorilla and a whale", One popular story is that "Gojira" was actually the nickname of a rather large, muscular, and hairy stagehand at Toho Studio.
