One of the Movie prequel comics showed one of the human law enforcement/military guys driving Breakdown, after BD had been "deactivated" by human tech. IIRC he said it drives like a regular car, w/ really good handling.
Thinking about the way Soundwave died in DOTM, I wonder if you could take his corpse, fold it back up into his Mercedes mode, and drive it/him?
Is it wrong to think this?

Prime drived one of his comrades who got decapitated in Ongoing 23 (or 22?) after folding the corpse from robot mode to a motorcycle - James Roberts really rules.
However, Soundwave seemed like he suffered some more severe damage in the movie, so it may be impossible to make the corpse drivable.

It depends on what your opinion of the Transformers 'disguise' is, and on which continuity you're in.
If it's G1/G2, then maybe. The Robots are all modular, so maybe if killed in robot form they could be folded back into a vehicle, and it's been shown that oil can be condensed into Energon using relatively small quantities.
So assuming that the engine/gas tank/car internals are not tied to the magical, life-force part of a TF, then maybe you could.
But of course, that's also going under the assumption that a G1 TF actually has a functioning engine/gas tank and does not just power the wheels using hidden servos feeding off of their Energon supply.
(If anyone knows of any G1 episodes where a TF gets gas from a gas pump or anything like that, please alert me)
For Beast Wars, there's nothing to ride in/on.
For the Movies, I'd say that it would be impossible if the TF was killed with the slightest violence. The disguises they posses are far more complex, and I doubt that without a TF's Spark powering it, you could ever fold one back together.
It would be like if humans has the magical ability to rearrange our bones and muslces into different patterns. (A nasty and bizarre analogy, but the complexity of the human body gets the idea across) A highly complex organism could do it, but you couldn't really do it by 'hand' and be left with a viewable result. It would be far too complex, and it would need a living force behind it for it to ever work.
And I'd say it's safe to assume that an average sized movie TF is on the same level of complexity as a human.

What recent decision of Hasbro can't the above picture apply to?

G1 toon, no, but I think it happened once in the comic.

thats not exactly true.Certin BW characters did indeed have cockpits, Optimul Optimus and TM2 Megatron for example.

I never thought TF's ran on gas. I got an image of Prime rolling up to a gas station in the middle of a battle to fill up. HA!
